Really tired of Matusz...

I just want to say two things.

1. Brian Matusz is fine in the bigger picture. He has a long career ahead of him. This is what reliever variance looks like up-close-and-personal to the fans who follow the team most closely.

2. That doesn't mean I think he's fine down the stretch as the O's lefty specialist (loogy) right now in the pennant chase and hopefully the playoffs in 2014 for a team that is in real contention, and who, while not likely a 95+ win team, has a legitimate chance of making the playoffs and beating anyone in a playoff series.

To summarize: I'm not down on Matusz over the long term, but we could REALLY use another lefty besides Matusz in front of Britton now.

(And when you consider all the factors, that means I don't expect that Matusz will be an Oriole next year.)

(vs. MARINERS, 7/25)

Possibly his best game of the season.

1.67 shutout innings.

Faced 6 batters, got 5 of them out, 3 via the strikeout.

Struck out the side in the 8th inning (with a 2-out double sandwiched in between.)

Entered the game with runners on 1st and 2nd base with two outs, and got Romero to fly out to end the threat.

LOL. Palmer blistered him the whole time he was out there. Was no where near the catchers target. Everything up. He was pretty damn lucky tonight.
He was able to get ahead in the count and control the ABs.

This is what I was thinking (and feeling), also.

Perhaps not his best outing of the season, but certainly his most effective, particularly considering the high stakes (having no leeway whatsoever from the time that he came into the game until the time that he left) that he was pitching under.

He did the job. Period. Next?
Is that really how you measure an outing???
Come now, you know Roy is not analyzing the outing, but instead acknowledging the result (fist pump style).

Also ...... somewhat ironic, considering Roy's reputation of usually being so pessimistic and/or often looking at the gloomy side of Oriole Land.

I thought Matusz looked good on the first two batters. Not so much on the other two. But it amazes me how the haters will discount any good outing he has, and then lay into him when he has a bad game.

Actually, he faced 6 batters overall ...... 5 outs, and 1 double.

Don't want to short change him. ;)

One thing I noticed is he just can't keep the ball down. When he gets beat it's because the ball is up. Is it control or just a bad approach. I noticed Joseph holding the glove low in the zone a few times?

I wish McFarland had the normal advantage vs. lefty batters; we have other pitchers who could back him up in his current role.

I think I'll take my analysis from Jim Palmer. He thought that Matusz was pretty lucky against a few hitters, and that's the same impression I had. I'll take the results from last night, but I don't trust Matusz as far as I can throw him.

Since when does noticing that a player hasn't performed well make one a "hater?"

PS - I hate Brian Matusz.

Give me a break. I suppose Palmer is a hater too.

Amazes me your orange tinted glasses are still opaque after all these years of sun in your eyes.
