My wording was more around just how bad this team construction looked around that time due to injury concerns and nobody really hitting. Then Eloy acquired, hits well, Mayo looked terrible offensively and defensively, and then shortly thereafter Ramon starts hitting again.
His bat looked good enough for a call up. So, lightning in a bottle was more about seeing it'd translate to help right this ship somewhere/anywhere.
He was called up and started 3 games in a row. Then he played sporadically thereafter. I think it was entirely linked to how Eloy was hitting and how poorly Mayo looked. The coaches up here had to see something wrong if they pulled the playing time that quickly.
I really wonder if Elias called Mayo up just to see if they could catch lightning in a bottle if he hit the ground running, and he just showed very poorly.
I've gotta think the ADOT is down because we've really went all in on the play action screens. Those plays have been executed to perfection.
I in general also like the fact that Monken is comfortable targeting intermediate routes at the expense of deep ones. Lamar has been ridiculously good at this depth for a very long time and it felt bad when we used to go for go and deep pylon routes only for Lamar to overthrow it by 4 feet.
Not gonna speak for SG, but IMO...bringing him up, and only playing him a bit here and there wasn't doing him any favors.
He'd have been better off playing every day at AAA and mashing instead of being up in Baltimore going 0-4 and waiting two days to have to go 0-4 again.
In what world did they screw up Mayo? His arm slot changes at 3B were supposed to improve his defense, but it was still a shortcoming and liability. He didn't hit worth a lick and was exposed to pitches outside as well as breaking balls. He was overmatched. Arguably speaking he should have been sent down and not called back up, that I could get behind. But when he wasn't hitting a lick when called up *and* defensively the O's were challenged, there was a large blackhole throughout the lineup because the rest of the guys weren't hitting either.
