Right now most are talking about a potential $400 million contract for Harper and I think that will end up being way light when the time comes. As outsiders, our perception of market seems to be a year or two behind what teams have the wherewithal to spend and are willing to spend. That's why there are so many shocking contracts each offseason. They're shocking to us, but not the teams.

Boras is known for huge first asks and he might open Harper's free agency by saying he wants a 15-year-old contract worth $600 million. It sounds insane now, but in three years it might not be so unrealistic. And remember, that's just a first ask. Boras starts there and negotiates down.

Don't be surprised if he says no!

WAPO

Tom Boswell was correct in his April 20 Sports column, “Lerners can’t delay on career contract,” that the Lerner family, which owns the Washington Nationals, needs to lock up right fielder Bryce Harper. But how? Will $750 million over 15 years be enough?

Mr. Harper’s agent is Scott Boras. Any offer the Nationals make is likely to be rejected, becoming the starting point for bids by the Yankees and Dodgers and anyone else who wants to get into it. Mr. Boras is not likely to agree to any offer if he thinks there is a higher number out there among the high rollers. The Yankees could offer Mr. Harper a place in the pantheon along with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra. The Dodgers also could offer him a place in history plus Hollywood glamour.
