I think the only reason that they tendered a contract to Matusz is that he gets David Ortiz out. It looks like the Red Sox will be the O's main rivals this season, and they still have 16 games remaining.

There's a chance that Matusz will earn a DFA despite his success against Ortiz, but I don't think the team will go for long without a lefty specialist. TJ doesn't really qualify; he doesn't have the stuff or performance history of being particularly tough on lefties.

Do you really think they would keep a pitcher because of success against one player? Not saying you are wrong, just seems unlikely.

I honest to god, have no idea why his option was picked up LAST year aside from this year. It is terrible decision making IMO.

I doubt the O's DFA Matusz as long as they are in first place with the 600 win percentage. They have a bunch of relievers that are doing well vs lefties including Britton, O'Day, Brach, Worley, and Bundy.

Matusz can be this years Jason Garcia. Pitching is garbage time until he finds his control. It will take a losing streak for the O's to consider DFAing Matusz IMO.

I had the idea they might be waiting until Gallardo is ready and then can dfa Matisse without having to drop anyone else to AAA. But if Gallardo isn't going to start throwing in games for another week that doesn't seem likely.
