To get a starting pitcher, who either overpay for mediocrity or clean out the rest of the farm system for "good". No thanks. Just say no!

Overpaying for mediocrity is at least possible.

I'm not sure the Orioles have enough farm talent to acquire anyone decent.

The market is just not there right now. TB seems like a good match but a trade with them is unlikely. I like James Paxton from SEA. I don't see what SEA would want from us. Givens?

With such a small supply demand will be insane. Why do you think we have already seen a couple of deals? Teams know if they wait the price will skyrocket.

Perhaps instead of looking at a veteran ML salary dump kind of guy we should be looking for an emerging AAA type guy

How about Mancini, Sisco, and probably something else for Josh Hader

or find another emerging pitcher like Hader

at least you get a guy who is young and cost controlled and give up young cost controlled position players to get it done

Lol. We could never do that because it would turn Josh Hader into a Erik Bedard type package. We've already lost the comp pick from the HOU deal, then we'd be giving up 3 top prospects.

Our best bet is for teams like the Cards, Pirates, M's, CWS to fall out the race and turn into sellers.

I wouldn't pay for mediocrity but if Gray could be had I would let Beane raid our farm system and let him take any three or 4 prospects he wanted. No questions asked.

I think Beane would pass...

Is Matt Moore considered a potential salary dump?

Has a 5 ERA since 2013 and the TJ surgery. TB has depth at SP and now has Matt Andriese(6-0, 2.66) in the pen with the aforementioned Erasmo Ramirez.

Moore's salary;

2016- 5 million

2017- 7 million, w/2.5 million buyout

2018- 9 million, w/1 million buyout

2019-10 million, w/750k buyout

Probably wishful thinking. But they could do a contender-contender swap and get a reliever for him(Givens). If they fall out of it they could sell him off for a package of prospects.

Why not Hellickson? History in the AL East and had bounced back plenty this year.

I like Nolasco and Hellickson of the names mentioned. Nolasco will come cheaper due to the money remaining on his deal.

I think Ervin Santana gets destroyed in the AL East. No thanks.

Any of the better pitchers are going to cost us too much in terms of prospects. We would be emptying out literally everything we have of value to put a package together.

    • I think he's claimed and right away.
    • His Dad is a big boy and obvious lifter.  Some guys are naturally good squatters.  That’s an impressive number for Holliday, but who knows exactly how legit the actual squat is.  You can find high school kids at nearly every high school about his size with similar squat numbers.  Granted, they will be some of the strongest pound for pound kids, but it’s not a crazy number.
    • Fair point, but these outliers are squatting like 40% more than Holliday is.  There are likely plenty of guys in the NCAA that can hit Holliday's numbers, and are in his age range.   There were like 50+ guys at this year's combine with a 10 yard split of 1.5 or better or 40 times of 4.5 or better, and 1rm squat correlates with both 10 yard split and 40 time, such that if you hit those numbers in 10 or 40, then your mean 1rm squat would be predicted to be about 2.5x body weight, which would be right around 500 lbs for a 200 lb guy.  If you want to call NFL caliber college guys outliers, I guess?  But Holliday is an MLB caliber guy, so he still fits.   Elite athletes just aren't normal, man.
    • The fact that they put this on the 1991 Donruss, perhaps the ultimate peak of the junk wax era, makes this even funnier to me.  If toilet paper ever shot up in price I wouldn't care because I've got heaps of '91 Donruss floating around. This is very true, which makes me thinks he'll get claimed somewhere else.
    • It's like the ghost of Chris Davis found him and has taken over his body.   I know bat speed isn't everything, but with the bat speed info that dropped, I took a look.  His average is 70.9 which isn't terribly slow, it's actually pretty average.   For whatever reason, he just can't square anything up.  I hope he fixes it but it's really tough to watch right now.
    • Just a few years ago this was the type of guy we would of claimed.
    • I believe that the bad umpiring in the major leagues is one of the reason s why the jump from AAA to the majors gap seems larger than ever.
