At risk of being gross here... really? I mean, don't dead bodies smell to begin with? And bodies that have been underwater probably also smell like salt water. I find it hard to believe that a body that has been under salt water would smell like alcohol just because the person drank a lot before their death. Yeah, you can smell it on someone's breath, but if they are dead and have no breath?

Just seems really odd to me. I'm sure they can, and probably have, tested to determine if they were drinking. But I find it hard to believe rescue workers could smell alcohol that people had drank on dead bodies pulled out of the water.

You also have to think that alcohol doesn't metabolize anymore. It's still in the stomach, the bloodstream, etc. Not real pleasant when you start thinking about it.

Just to clarify some details. Jose and one of the friends, were recovered on the jetty. They were never in the water. One victim was recovered from the water. He may not have been submerged. I think the confusion is caused because reports say divers make the recovery of the bodies. Keep in mind at 3 am as they were making the recovery, they had no idea if there were additional victims; therefore, they sent divers over to do the recovery so that could check under water.

Not NEAR as bad as when Tavares killed that girl.

Does Loria have a history of stepping up?

Of course I don't think there is much of a case, I think the other two were aware of his impairment.

There is always a settlement. Unless it can be proved that one of them was the supplier.

But yeah. They already retired the number permanently.

I think the commissioner would be better served worrying about alcohol abuse among players and managers instead of if the games last three hours.

To be fair, he was a young 20 something in Miami. Coke, booze and boats are part of the landscape down there.

First off, I seriously doubt that most 24-year-olds who live in Miami regularly drink half a dozen beers, do a few lines of coke, then go recklessly tearing around in a boat at 2am. Life isn't an episode of Miami Vice.

But in addition, Fernandez was a professional athlete with a career on the line. Even if he didn't die because of his reckless behavior he stood a decent chance of being popped on a drug test, suspended, his reputation impacted, and potentially reduced future earnings.
