I think errors serve their purpose. I'd say that I agree with the official scorer 90% of the time, whereas the judgments about which ball a faster player might have reached are very hard to discern. I like having the advanced stats, but I like having errors as well.

Unearned runs, however, are much more troublesome. Brach comes in and allows a baserunner, Davis makes an error that could have been the third out, and two unearned runs go to Jimenez. Well, OK, sort of, though it seems odd that the result for him is any different than if the two runs had scored on a double that Brach had given up. Then Brach serves up a three-run dinger on the next pitch, but none of the runs he allowed are charged to him as earned, even though they were totally preventable. That all seems kind of arbitrary and crazy. I kind of liked Bill James' proposed approach in his Win Shares book -- assign half of the "unearned" runs to the pitcher. That's not perfect, but it's a better rough approximation of responsibility than assigning nothing to the pitcher.

I care a lot more about him not blowing any remaining saves than whether he allows any earned runs the rest of the way.

Unless there are errors, him breaking the record would take care of that itself.

50 in 62 years, some 9500+ games. I think that proves my point. Pretty rare.

The formatting didn't come out lined up very well, but the BS with no runs was the column that starts with 29. Sparky Lyle had 29 blown saves in his career where he wasn't charged with a run, or almost 1/3rd of his 95 career blown saves.

Tippy Martinez had 13.

Yes, it's fairly uncommon, but this year there have been 109 in 2300 and some odd games. So roughly one in every 21 games.

Here's a good example: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL201606210.shtml The same game where Britton allowed all his unearned runs Oliver Drake got a zero-run blown save. He came in with the bases loaded and no one out, threw a wild pitch that tied the game and got charged with a blown save.

Rodney gave up 5 ER in 74.2 IP. Zach has given up 4 ER in 64.1 IP. He can't give up another run or he won't break the record.

Absolutely not true. Zack can give up one more run- as long as he pitches 10.2 more innings, then he'll still break the record. :beerchug1:

Watching on television, through the eye of the center field camera, the pitch looks unhittable.
Standing at home plate, with a bat in your hands, it looks just about the same.

"A devastating pitch," Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria said. "Really hard, and with tremendous sink. It looks straight until it gets to the plate, and then it goes down."

Zach Britton throws it, game after game, pitch after pitch. Hitters pound it into the ground, or they just whiff. According to FanGraphs, their batting average against it was .154, the slugging percentage was .197, and nearly 30 percent of the time they swung, they missed, through Sept. 24.

The average velocity: 96.3 mph.

"It's the best left-handed sinker I've ever seen," said one American League scout with decades of experience watching thousands of pitches.

"He's kind of like the modern-day Mariano Rivera," Longoria said. "Basically just one pitch, but it's a devastating pitch."
