Machado IS our Jeter... Our HanRam... Our... "New Cal Ripken"... Right?

Agreed.

Plus Jeter, Gwynn and Ripken were perfect role models. Manny is a punk.

Wasn't even aware people felt this way about Manny. He can be hotheaded, but most of the time he seems pretty goofy and fun-loving. I can't judge too harshly on this though, as I always had trouble warming up to Brian Roberts for similar reasons.

That's awesome. The day after the O's clinch a postseason birth someone on the team's top fan site says "Derek Jeter was a perfect role model, Manny is a punk." You might as well disparage Thomas Jefferson on the 4th of July by comparing him unfavorably to Napoleon.

It just shows that no matter the topic someone is going to have a contrarian viewpoint. I think if the OH existed in 1988 there would have been a sizeable minority who detested Eddie Murray and wanted Cal gone.

That was the unfortunate day of his death and the day of our Owner's birth.

Certainly has the talent to be THAT guy. He has yet to display anywhere near the heart of a guy like Jones, or the maturity of a guy like Ripken. High bars, both, and few would be expected to meet those standards at Manny's young age. If anything he's shown a (limited) propensity for selfishness, impulsiveness, and immaturity. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him turn it around, extend in Baltimore, and go on to become an all-time great player; but he could also go full A-Rod.

TL;DR: Jury's still out.

We got team haters, player haters and stat haters here!

Adam Jones is our Jeter/Pedroia. He is the unofficial captain of the team.

HanRam? Idunno, maybe Trumbo. Ramirez isn't close to being Boston's alpha player.

Ripken -- yeah I can see Machado being a parallel. Way too early though. The Orioles would first need to extend his contract.

Interesting take. You're right that Adam is our Jeter/Pedroia in the sense that Adam is the veteran leader of the team.

But thinking about the super-elite talents - generational talents - I don't know if Adam would make a list with talents such as Jeter, Cal, etc. Those guys transcended their teams. Their greatness was admired universally. Not sure Adam's there, or going there, but Machado appears to be.

I think he's our Eddie Murray. Great, great player on a HOF track who just goes out and helps the team win, but almost inexplicably has ended up with a small minority of fans who can't stand him and want him gone. Presumably because he hasn't signed a super team-friendly extension and hasn't completed the Cal Ripken school of never, ever doing anything the slightest bit offensive.

I think that's a good statement.

    • As someone that was all for DFA’ing McKenna for Hicks, I really can’t fault him for tonight.   I’m impressed he stole the base. He sort of had to run there with two outs. He stole it. He just came off the bag. That happens.  The route may have not been the best because he was going to his left and as a RH thrower he was just trying to position himself to throw home. He doesn’t have Vlad Sr’s arm out there. That’s a .01% chance play there.  Our CF depth is pretty thin. I think the only way we DFA McKenna is if Hicks comes here. Kjerstad will be the one to go for Hays. Remember last August when at full strength/healthy Mullins, and only a 26 man roster, we rolled with a 4 man bench of McCann, Hicks, Mateo, Urias/Frazier/Westburg.  Oddly, we’re deep enough into the season, and CF depth is thin, that I’d say there’s a 50/50 shot McKenna doesn’t clear waivers. I don’t know we have the luxury of CF depth to DFA him w/o Hicks in the mix.
    • I think they will DFA him. They already did it once. And the fact nobody claimed him means you’re probably right about not starting for other teams.
    • I had fun watching the extra innings of this game. That was good TV. Thanks Craig for serving up the evening’s entertainment!
    • Additionally, you can hover over the user name you want to ignore and a box pops up. The last button on the right at the bottom is the ignore button, click that and check all three boxes and you're done. Source: I'm a professional ignorer.
    • We have threads asking for Kremer, Grayson, and Povich in the closer role. Can we acknowledge that Cano is the pretty obvious next man up if Kimbrel is removed at some point? I don’t really care about his 9th inning splits. He’s our best reliever and until he gets a chance and fails I’m going to assume that’s just noise and he’ll do the best job. Tonight makes nine straight appearances with either a Save or Hold. Overall he has held a lead 10 times in 11 chances, and the one miss was a bad outing but still nearly a SV if not for Gunnar’s walk-off throwing error.
    • McKenna was finally beginning to grow on me after years of my derision. He's done a few good things offensively. But I think he wouldn't  start for another team in the American League. I would DFA him(they won't) and bring up Hays in LF, Cowser in CF for a while, and Santander in RF. I still think if they give Kjerstad enough at bats, and not just coming off the bench as a PH, he will hit and hit for power....I dont like him getting 4 at bats a week... I think he needs to play. Mullins needs to sit for a few games. He simply cant track the ball all of a sudden. Its almost hard to watch. Maybe he's hurting.
    • Second game in a row he couldn't get 3 outs. I don't understand how anyone would think he's fine right now, or "he just does this". It's not sustainable to keep running him out there and giving up HRs and walking the yard and expecting another reliever to have to come in and bail him out. If he's the plan for the 9th in close games, they're in trouble.
