I'm sorry but can someone give me the dumbed down explanation of OPS+

I haven't a clue what it is and I consider myself a stats guy.  Sorry.

Basically it is a normalized version of OPS.  It adjusts for things like park effects.  They set average at 100 so it is easy to see where a player falls on the scale.

The scale is simple, each point over or under 100 is 1%.  So if you have an OPS+ of 90 you were 10% below league average.

 

Not sure where the cutoff for elite would be.  League leaders last season were Votto at 160 and Trout at 174.  Cruz finished 10th at 147.

Hope that gives you some guidelines.

 

I prefer wOBA and wRC+ to OPS and OPS+.
