This article is easy reading and overly simplistic but it is sourced at least somewhat. I’ll link scholarly stuff too if you want.

Thanks.

I'm still doubtful that there is much a player can do to strengthen the UCL to handle the stress of pitching.

But I do appreciate the research.

Oh, it’s more limiting damage than preventing it altogether, the forces of pitching are very extreme. It would seem (in my non-expert opinion) the best way to have a strong UCL is to start throwing sub maximally and consistently from a young age and to delay max effort pitches and even pitching off a mound as long as possible. Along with proper strength training and mobility work. Some of those things aren’t particularly realistic though.

You don't get drafted first round with submaximal effort unfortunately.

The discomfort in Harvey’s right elbow is due to a mild case of tendinitis, according to an industry source.

Harvey had been cleared on Aug. 6 to resume flat-ground throwing after experiencing some stiffness in his right forearm that removed him from the mound. He complained yesterday of soreness in the elbow, which always sets off organizational alarms based on his Tommy John surgery in 2016.

Hand specialist Dr. Brian Schofield examined Harvey today in Sarasota and a scan didn’t reveal any structural damage in the elbow.

Yes indeed...first year in (for 25 million this year, so it looks like that would be a -.2 WAR for the Cubs 25 mil in year 1)

I don’t know, but here are three thoughts.   I will bet you that old Yu will not be exercising his contract opt out after next season 2019,and instead being that he will be 32 next year, that the remainder of his deal which runs through 2023 at a remaining cost of about 22 million per year will be looking pretty good to him I wager and not looking too good at the end on review for the Cubbies.  And thirdly, Theo has always been overrated, imho.

If any pitcher screamed you don’t give this guy a big contract it was Darvish.

A contract like this would set the Orioles back for years.

Cubs can just go sign another pitcher to make up for this mistake.

So we have 3 young arms, all hyped to be future stud TORs.

Gausman, Bundy and then they added Harvey.

The new Calvary was coming to carrying the pitcher burden for the next decade.

Gausman never achieved it, and ended up getting a plane ticket out of town.

Bundy has teased up with flashes of greatness and the ability to cough up the long ball.

Harvey is back to the DL, and some doubt if he will ever stay healthy.

Bad luck, or what?

Don't forget Matusz.  He was supposed to be great too.

He was also shaking out his arm after every pitch in the 4th. Didn't look comfortable at all.

Yes, another hyped pitcher that didnt amount to what he was supposed to be.

Matusz issues were between the ears IMO. Can’t fault the organization for that really. He went from being ridiculously good for half a season to a disaster without an injury or obvious delivery flaw that I can recall being discussed. If only they could have hypnotized him into believing that every batter was Papi.

He was a 2 pitch pitcher that the league adjusted to him. He had a decent career as a Lefties out guy, more than most guys do, when all they can do, is dream about playing pro ball.
