I really don't understand why he doesn't use the change to righties ever. I understand that it's something many other pitchers, including Tillman (don't really understand it in his case, either), do, but I really feel like, when you're a two pitch pitcher with one pitch that is pretty shaky (SL) and the other one you don't command that well (FB), that it doesn't make too much sense to be taking another possibility out of hitter's heads, or more importantly, out of your own possibilities.

Gausman was the beneficiary of 3 double plays in the first 4 innings.

13 out of the 18 outs that he recorded came via the Groundout and the Strikeout.

Thought the same thing. I feel like he needs to use the change up more. I'm glad he uses the slider now, he needed a third pitch. But for him to be really good he needs to use the change up more.

I don't know what the stats say but from watching Gausman last night I'd say the following:

1. He either stopped using the two seamer or made an adjustment to it.   No tailing fastballs that started on the outside and tailed back over the middle of the plate.  His command of the fastball was good, not great, but better than I've seen it all season.   He didn't have as much movement but he had the best command/control I've seen this year.   I'd guess he just went to the 4 seamer and ditched the two seamer but maybe he made an adjustment on the two seamer.

2. His changeup looked very good and although I think Smoak may have it the change up for the homerun I'd say that Gausman should ditch the splitter and just go with the changeup.   Why?    He tends to hang the splitter more and the changeup actually seems to have more deception than the splitter.  Bordick made the same point last night.   His splitter is more of a "tumbler" and although it has great movement, hitters seem to pick it up and realize it's not a fastball.  Very few hitters tend to chase it out of the zone.    I think his changeup is more deceptive and he seems to not hang it as much.

3. A week ago I said Gausman should just give up on the breaking pitch.   Last night it looked serviceable.   Still, it's only good when he keeps it down and away and he leaves too many hanging on the inside calf where it's a meatball pitch.    He actually threw some to LH batters yesterday and did okay.   As long as he keeps it down maybe it's not a lost cause yet.

4. There is hope for Gausman.   He simplified last night, IMO.   Less use or completely ditching the two seamer.   Using the change up instead of the splitter.   Could be wrong but that's what it looked like.

Buck on KG:

On whether Gausman can build off his outing: “I hope so. But that’s always convenient and this means that and maybe this is going to do this. Times and not, that’s how it starts, but there are too many good players up here who don’t care how you’ve been pitching and how you pitched the last time out. First inning was big for him. Got a big double play ball and we let them off the hook a couple situations, but that’s more a tribute to the pitches they made. I hope so, but we’ll see.”

On Gausman: “I liked the way he finished the sixth inning. Kevin has been frustrated. We all know he’s capable of better and that was. I think we commented about (Michael) Fulmer over in Detroit. You’ve got to figure out a way to finish that inning against some tough hitters. I thought fastball command was a lot better.”

“You don’t think any less of a person because they haven’t thrown a baseball where they’re supposed to. We know what he’s capable of. I still talk to him about LSU and their starting pitcher who might be there when we draft. Kevin also knows at some point we’re going to go, ‘This ain’t good enough. Let’s go.’

Only 1 Walk, and 5 Strikeouts.

I think Kevin deserved slightly better tonight. He got a bit unlucky with a few weak hits in the 3-run inning, and I didn't think he was getting as many of the borderline high strikes as Nova. Still not a great outing. We haven't really seen his A game this year at any point.
