What is sometimes lost on people is that the 1973 Orioles team came oh so close to having a rematch of the 1969 World Series with the Mets. The 1969 Mets had Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Gary Gentry atop their starting rotation. The 1973 Mets had Seaver, Koosman, and Jon Matlack atop theirs. The 1973 Orioles (like the 1969 Orioles) still had Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, and Dave McNally atop their starting rotation, also.

SIDE NOTE: ) In my rat's ass of an opinion, the real Miracle Mets team was the 1973 team, not the 1969 team.

The 1969 Mets won 100 games, and swept the Braves in the NLCS.

The 1973 Mets made it to the World Series with a record of 82-79 with one rain-out ...... to this day, that is the worst record ever for a team that has made it to the World Series since 1903.

The 1973 Mets also were in last place on August 30th ........ that's right, they went from last place to first place in the final month of the season, leapfrogging the other 5 teams in their division in that one-month span.

Then they beat the heavily favored Cincinnati Red Machine in that year's NLCS.

Finally, they pushed one of the all-time great teams (the 1972-1973-1974 Oakland Athletics) to the brink in the World Series before bowing, 4 games to 3.

What the 1969 Mets and the 1973 Mets had in common were excellent pitching, and good defense ........ and when you have those two strengths, you can conquer giants in a short playoff series, as the Mets did in 1969 with the Orioles, and again in 1973 with the Reds, and nearly yet again in 1973 with the Athletics.

I can see this team bouncing around where we are in the standings for the rest of the year. But even if that is the case, this team is fun in all its flawed glory. Watching Ubaldo pitch is always fascinating....even when he implodes. The same with Miley. When they just manage to keep it together it is fun.

Beckham's run is fun.

Watching Manny and Schoop is sublime.

Amd those are just a few of the interesting story lines.

I will be OK if they just play the year out like they are right now, but don't get into the playoffs. That said, let's win this thing!!!

Only saw the last few innings but sat there thinking this is so much better than having no hope at all.

Schoop and Mancini are steady.  Pitching picking up.  New spark plug at short and one particular corner infielder giving me the feeling he is and is going to stay blistering hot!!!

Go O's!

Here's hoping that the Angels game goes extras and really messes up their pitching. Angels have already used five guys out of the pen and trail 11-10.

Eh, we may actually want to see these guys out of the pen.?

Nice help from Oakland today.  They battled back.

As Jim Hunter says, that's a modest two game win streak.

7.5 games out of first

4.5 games out of 1st Wild Card

2 games out of 2nd Wild Card

2.5 out of the wild card now that KC won the second game of their DH w/ Seattle.

KCR 57-53 ---

TBR 58-55 0.5 GB

SEA 57-56 1.5 GB

BAL 55-56 2.5 GB

LAA, MIN and TEX all behind us now, but within 2 games of us.    It's going to be interesting.
