Orioles all-23 team

now

Recommended Posts

With the Sisco kid and Santander making the roster, and Cortes and Castro on the cusp, that's an unusual youth movement of four 23-year-olds at once. And the next cohort of the same age is not far behind: Mullins, Hays, Scott (okay, 23.6), and Harvey. Reinforcements for them are looking strong too: Akin, Sedlock, Liranzo, Rifaela.

Who says rebuilding and contending can't coexist?

Let's see how they stack up by position:

C - Sisco
DH - Santander
LF - Rifaela
CF - Mullins
RF - Hays

SP - Harvey
SP - Akin
SP - Sedlock
S/R - Castro
S/R - Cortes
S/R - Scott
S/R - Liranzo

Must be spring... Love those baby birds! :x

ps. using Roster Resource for ages, 22.6 - 23.6.

Sorry, sorry... in the midst of researching the early 50s, unconsciously thinking of the TV series, The Cisco Kid. So, along the same line of thought, notable 23-year-old Baby Birds I see in that era include only:

1954 Bob Turley

1956 Billy O'Dell

...okay, end of flashback. Back to admiring the current fledglings...

I find it an interesting exercise, though I don't know if any value can be gained from it. Age 23 represents a fairly advanced young player as a starter or main contributor. It is inspiring to see how much the youth contributed to the 1966-67 squads that began the Orioles dynasty of the 60s-70s. The 1988/90 and 2006/09 squads, a somewhat lesser glimpse of the brighter years to come six years later, in each case.
