Do we have an Orioles Nickname thread? Not the ones the press or their teammates give them, but nicknames from us.

I nominate:

Ryan Mountcasual

as the initial inductee.

He's the most unflappable, nothing-bothers-me player since that other icon of casual, "Complacent" Mark Reynolds.

While looking at MLB standings, I tend to look at the divisions in terms of number of teams above .500..Today, I noticed that the O's have played 32 games with teams above .500, with a record of 13-19, by far the most of any team in baseball. Division leaders?? Yankees 12 (8-4), Minnesota 8 (2-6), Dodgers 7 (6-1), Milwaukee 11 (5-6), Mets 14 (9-5), Houston 16 (9-7)Tampa 12 (5-7)....FWIW, some of these division leaders may not be as good as they appear and the O's may not be as bad as their last place in the AL East indicates. As the season unfolds, the AL East are likely to have 4 teams (Boston??) above .500, the AL Central 1. I will be happy when the schedules aren't quite so skewed and hope they can arrange a more balanced (in terms of timing games within a division). 13 games with the Yankees out of 45 so far and 0 with Blue Jays?? It makes no sense.

Oh, I've got tons of nicknames for the players...

  • I call Hays "Dusty" because of the dirt between pitches
  • Mountcastle is The Mountie (especially good because he hits so well versus Toronto)
  • Ramon Urias has the initials "R. U." so instead of a nickname he gets a series of "Are you..." questions like "Are you ready?", "Are you serious?", "Are you out of your mind?"
  • Mullins is "Everyone's Favorite Oriole"
  • Adley is Ad Man
  • Santander is Banco
  • Odor is Bunyan/Bunion because he's either a mythical lumberjack or a growth on your foot
  • For Felix Bautista I just yell at him to "Fix It!"
  • Cionel is the Colonel or Col. Swaggy
  • Jorge Lopez was HaLo
  • Trey was Paison
  • Kreihbel is Baby Roo because, you know, he's a Joey
  • "Dealin' Tate"

I need to work on nicknames for the rotation.

****, this is boring.  How can it be so boring when ST is underway?

Because there is no Drama...  If this was a reality show it would be cancelled.   Everyone believes most positions and roster are set outside of 1 or 2 surprises but they are for back up rolls.  Until the games start, for the ones televised, and players play and injuries happen.  There just nothing happening any different that we see/read on a day to day basis.

If the Germans followed baseball there would be a word in German for the steep emotional falloff between "Oh boy, pitchers and catchers report today!" to "Oh wait, spring training workouts are very boring, why do I forget this every year."

This seems like as good a place as any for this 2-days old news I haven't seen hashed about here, and it doesn't really rate its own thread.     I'm gonna hope "down the road" is 2030 - playing in a DH league will be a fly in the ointment of Adley precisely reiterating Buster Posey's life experience.     Kid's got enough to do anyways.

Adley Rutschman will not be taking reps at first base.

Hyde said catcher Adley Rutschman could be a fill-in first baseman at some point, but, “not right now. Might be possible down the road.”

    • In terms of energy?   e = 1/2 mv^2 football: 60 mph -> 26.8 m/s, 14.5 oz = .411 kg.  1/2 * (26.8^2) * .411 = 147.5 joules. baseball: 102 mph -> 45.59 m/s, 5 oz = .142 kg.  1/2 * (45.59^2) * .142 = 147.5 joules.   I don't think they're 100% equivalent - I think the higher raw speed on the arm of a 102 mph pitch introduces more stress on the arm than a 60 mph football throw.  But they're not that far off.
    • There is no chance that over 60 mph for a QB is the equivalent of 102.  QBs do not train for velocity like pitchers do.
    • I would prefer they ask for Jon Gray in spite of the Orioles destroying him in his last start - he wouldn't have to face the Orioles lineup again.
    • He makes $43 million this year. The Mets are paying $21 million of that. I don’t think we pick up the remaining $10+ post deadline for 10-12 starts. It would just depend on what Texas would ask for to pick up the tab.
    • Haynie on 105.7, has been beating the Luis Robert drum for months on the O’s pre game show. So I think that’s why people like the idea of Robert. Robert also is always hurt.  We need a bat. Probably a RH bat to DH in the playoffs versus a LH SP. That bat is Mayo. It’s just hard to get Mayo up before September when we get the extra roster spot.
    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
