Huh? They guy had the base stolen. I can only blame the runner going to 3rd on Ramon. If that runner is on 2nd base he scores easily on the error, so of course the error matters even if Ramon doesn't throw the ball into CF.

Yea, i thought about that after I typed it...But if he is at second, does he hesitate at all so that he doesn't run into an out at third? Is Stairs still walked to begin with?

I'd pitch to him, that's just me. If we're going with the RHP crushing excuse, Mr. Rolen is hitting them to the effect of an 858 OPS this year.

Pick your poison. Walkoff via HR or single. I guess we chose the single...

Yeah there were two outs, but unless Ramon throws Rios out, the ball still goes under Bynum's glove and Rios would easily score from second with two outs.

Gotcha. I think the point is that making the play would have ended the inning though. Good point though. Rios scores from second on that boner from Bynum.

This is true, but I haven't seen Ramon Hernandez do much right in the past 3 months... so I certainly wasn't expecting it tonight. It sounds stupid, but this just felt like a loss. I told my girlfriend, "They're gonna lose this game, and they're going to deserve to."

The immediate future looks pretty bleak. Funny how quickly things can change, huh?

The only move tonight I think was wrong was lifting Fahey for Payton. Fahey just had a great AB and got a big double, so you take him out for a guy who can't work the count? I understand Fahey isn't exactly Pujols, but you can't manage by reputation.

Bynum has to go. Gee wasn't Castillo impressive. Do they actually visit Norfolk and check out these guys. I thought Miller looked a lot better on TV yesterday..

I was on the Hopkins baseball team. When it rained we went to the Gym.

Only the super spoiled Lacrosse team always got the large Gym and we practiced in the wrestling room. It was 120 long , 7 feet high, and thickly padded on the floor. We actually hit in there. It was a shooting gallery. @#$%^& Lacrosse team.

That was the worst loss I've seen in a while. I've missed some of our more recent debacles.

We have plenty of people to blame for this, but I question bringing Sarfate in with runners in scoring position. He really doesn't know where the ball's going when he throws it, and once he gets behind in those situations, things can get ugly. I like him better starting off an inning.

Bynum needs to be off this team. Fahey can play -- that double he hit after fouling off a bunch of pitches got my attention.

And Ramon can't get gone soon enough. Can we get ANYTHING of value for him, and go ahead and bring up Weiters?

Unfortunately that wasn't the worst loss in the past 2 weeks.

You hope your catcher is good enough that the SS doesn't need to back him up in RF...

Even good catchers airmail the occasional throw. Middle infielders need to get the butts over there to back up... particularly if they know their catcher sucks. That's not to defend Ramon's performance at catcher at all because it has been completely unacceptable. The throw was terrible, but Rios was a little tangled up with Roberts who fell on him trying to catch the throw. It's possible that if Bynum had gotten a good jump over toward the back to back up the play, he might have been able to recover the ball in time to keep Rios at second or throw him out at third.

    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
    • I think Young will be added, and that is it. I like Pham, but no AAA experience makes him unlikely to be taken. Whatever open spots should be used to upgrade the bullpen and other pitching depth. It is well documented here that we don’t have much beyond raw guys like Strowd and Heid. we lack flexibility and options. This has to change.
