At this point I would like nothing better than for the Os to buy low on some 1-2 year bounceback candidates that we flip for value at next year’s deadline.  The only question is, are the Os actually capable of identifying and improving someone like this (spoiler: no).

Sure we are.    Nate McLouth?   Steve Pearce?   Miguel Gonzalez?   Mark Trumbo?  We’ve had our experiences spinning straw into gold.   Now, knowing when to flip them?    That’s another story.

People tend to forget how much Duquette was able to find when he was completely in charge of finding talent for the team. They tend to forget how much say Buck has in his 25-man roster. Hell, it's taken a three game sweep for some people to start thinking this team is on to something. lol

Duquette was brilliant in 2012 at finding nuggets.    Should have been Executive of the Year IMO.

What competition? The Orioles aren't in competition with anyone except the Royals, standings-wise. There's no reason they would claim players just to block trades.

If they're claiming a bunch of players, it must be because they actually like the players and think they can improve the club. And based on the current roster, that's not a far-fetched belief.

1) Just about everyone is put on revocable waivers.

2) When a guy is put on waivers in the American League the Orioles have the first waiver claim of any team in the league.

3) A good player is put on waivers in the American League with a below market rate contract

4) The Orioles have the first shot to claim him and do

5) The team pulls the player back.

Again, Joel Sherman, who probably knows more about what's going on than you and me, tweeted that this was surprising.  He probably wouldn't be surprised if it happened the way you describe it, but we'll see. I doubt anything actually happens, but good on the Orioles for potentially trying to add future contributors to their team.
