$2.6 million might be an overpay, but this is what happens when you have no President, no GM, no one really in charage of your organization. The longer the Angelos brothers sit on this decision, the more things the Orioles will miss out on like qualified baseball scouts/executives, high end minor league free agents that would like to sign with the Orioles because of opportunity but who won't wait forever, and possibly there own minor league managers and coaches who may get opportunities elsewhere.

Again, $2.6 million might have been an overpay, but it would have signaled that the Orioles were serious players, but right now the only guy that said the Orioles would be serious players in the international market was fired and now the Orioles are a rudderless ship.

If you are Gaston, the people you are interacting with from the Orioles may not even be there in a few weeks.  Given the Rays ability to develop pitchers, no brainer to go with the Rays.

Plus, he ended up getting $2.6 million when earlier it was thought he might command a million. But agreed, i don't see how anyone would rightfully think a player would sign with this rudderless organization unless they grossly overpaid, and who would even make that decision?

We need to face it, the organization is in the abyss until a decision is made on baseball operations people.

Yup...this needs to be done correctly.  I'm not holding out much hope that it will be, though.

Maybe a sale is pending and the new owner wants to pick his own people...can dream atleast.

No argument, although even if they HAD solid operational people in place at this point, it would be easy for a player like Gaston (and his agent) to simply look at the historically awful team they fielded this past season and just go with an organization that seems to be in better overall shape.

I'm not even sure naming/hiring baseball operations people is enough to drag us out of the abyss. Our reputation for ineptitude will continue to precede us until positive, tangible changes are made. Until then it's all just lip service.

I am with you.  If they were a company, they would be out of business.  Mainly because their product is terrible and the people who run them (whoever they are) just seem to be both slower and dumber than the people who run their competitors.  Hard to get behind a product like that.  I think the key is to emotionally detach from them, which is not easy to do but is probably best for these next few years.  The good news is that our expectations have to be almost non-existent.  Perhaps someone in the FO can use the Os precious international slot money to invest in some Mega Millions and Powerball tickets.

I’m with you. That’s how I am now. I’m going to start practicing by signing all of my correspondence with the following:

Emotionally detached,

This why they shouldn't have waited until the end of the season to start looking for replacements.  They traded for the International money to use it and should have had people in place to start doing so Oct 1.  The Gausman trade is just now horrible.  I don't think it is fair to paint the Angelos son's with the same brush we did their father just because they share a last name but so far they have failed miserably.

And the O’s had no qualms with a bucket full of unknown (to be polite)  called Tillman last year.  To the tune of $3 million. But for a guy with the upside of Gaston, they can’t top the Rays. Head scratcher. And yeah, I agree. They should have at least let DD get through October (per his contract) and handle this Int’l business.

Maybe, they felt 2.6 was too much for a 16 hurler?

I don't know if this is true or not, but it's clear that the Angelos brothers do things as quickly as their father. It's frustrating for everyone involved and the fans that support this team to see not only nothing being done, but nothing being really talked about. The Orioles need to be much more open to the press and get their words out there. I hope whoever they pick as President and GM will be much more media savvy.

Agreed, they've always been happy to flush money down the drain on obviously overpaid major league players, but won't got the extra mile on a lottery ticket.

Saying that, I think a lot of this has to do with there being no future leadership in charge right now.
