Josh Donaldson or Mike Moustakas?

Say they could be had on 1 year deals, who would you prefer? Donaldson has a higher upside and could bring a nice return at the deadline if he regains what he was pre-injur6.

Moustakas has been consistent in what he is and has stayed healthier than Donaldson.  I would like the Orioles to sign a guy like Donaldson and maybe Jose Iglesious to play SS.

Keep in mind, the Moustakas and Donaldson idea is solely for trade bait. I have no unrealistic ideas that they are contending with either.

Baltimore has always been a place where hitters seem to be able to turn their careers around. Well, until we give them long-term deals after.

This is exactly what the Yankees did with Alodris Chapman the year the Cubbies won it.  You're banking on them to be trade-able.   I don't have a problem with fliers like these, but they can't be too expensive and I would think that it would be a more suitable idea when we were on the verge of contention with maybe some "disposable" cash.  I don't think we have that right now, but I love these kinds of ideas and I no longer feel alone having them.??

Nope.

When you have money to burn you can play this game.

Well, both were traded midseason last year, Moustakas (traded 7/31) netting two young major leaguers who had both been top 100 prospects as of 2016 or later, and Donaldson (traded 8/31) netting a 25-year old pitcher in AA.   Donaldson had been on the DL for a considerable period prior to the trade and did not play until Sept. 11.

I think Donaldson is higher risk, potentially higher reward if he’s healthy.    I’m guessing that despite his health risks, he’ll cost more.   MLBTR says 1/$20 mm for Donaldson, 2/$16 mm for Moustakas.

If we were inclined to play this game (which I very much doubt), Donaldson would be too expensive and risky for my taste.   Moustakas would be a more modest risk with less potential upside.  I’d go with him, if forced to choose.

I’m probably the only one excited to see what Núñez can do over a full season. If we spend any money at all on a one year FA I’m going with a SP. If one of Cobb, Bundy, or Cashner miss significant time it’s going to be rough. Well...it’s gonna be rough either way but you know what I mean.

I'd rather see the team invest that money in their infrastructure. We're going to lose with or without Donaldson or Moustakas. It would just be a sad desperate attempt to sell tickets to those few fans who have been living under a rock.

Absolutely neither!

If we are committed to a rebuild why flush cash down the drain to move the needle a few games (possibly costing a place of two in the 2020 draft!)

I clearly said it wasn't to impact wins or losses. Moving the needle a few games probably won't jeopardize their draft standing either way. They are going to be bad.

Actually, there are more fans living under rocks than you think. Read the MASN and Orioles social media pages.

I guess it comes down to - would the prospects they expect to get in return be worth the money to sign Moustakas or Donaldson. How would the prospects they get back compare to what the O's could just sign on the International Market for the same amount of money? That's not accounting for the risk that they get hurt or perform below expectations, too.

Moustakas got 2 prospects that were former top 100 prospects. I doubt your getting that in the international market this late in the game. But you never know.

Your point is valid. Is the risk worth the reward. I'd never go the 1/20 Donaldson is predicted to get. And I doubt anyone will guarantee that. Incentives will be a big part of his deal.

I'm not that surprised, but I think the casual fan attending games will be more tied to the team winning then the team signing a player like Donaldson or Moustakas. I just don't think either of them can help put a dent in the win / loss record that's on the horizon. I also don't think the Orioles are a team savvy enough to flip a player for a big return. At least not yet.

    • The earliest 2025 NFBC results exist, and slotted him about the 30th best AL starter for 2025 alone's expected statistical production.    Eflin and all five guys in Tampa's forecast rotation (Baz, McClanahan, Pepiot, Bradley, Springs) fell around that level. That assumes free agents Burnes, Snell, Flaherty, Kikuchi, Pivetta, Fried and Manaea fall about half into the AL. He'll start Opening Day, but it is a byproduct of the disappointing beginning to Grayson's career and Bradish's current injury. I think odds are pretty low he is a 2026 Oriole.
    • Whoever we add needs to be able to play a solid CF or LF at OPACY and Pham definitely does not fit that bill.
    • I'm one for Tommy Pham, even though I'll take heat for it.  I think the veteran aspect of it could be key. O'Neil would be great, but he also brings more of what we have in the Ks and HRs department
    • Let's see how he does over a full year here first so we don't overpay for a SSS. He was pretty pedestrian prior to the trade.
    • I could see against tough lefties Holiday sits, Westy at 2B, and Mayo at 3B.  Or Holiday at SS to spell Gunnar sometimes too and this being the configuration. But yes, most of Holiday at 2B, Westy at 3B and Mayo DH or 1B.
    • I don't think you bring Slater back if you add Bader (unless Austin's willing to take a MiLB deal and start the year at Norfolk) because then you have to get rid of either Urias or Mateo, and that doesn't seem wise with how thinned out the IF depth is now and Holliday still trying to get his feet under him.
    • This is true. However, it is more situational in the post season. Guys are pitched to differently. You have to take what the game gives you. Home runs happen, but the best teams know when to take that shot and when to shorten up or be more line drive oriented. Home runs can be a surprise to good hitters who simply were in time and put a good swing on plane through the ball. It was a line drive that ran out of field. Hitters have to know who they are. Some sit on fast balls early in the count in a certain small box. If they get it, they take that A swing. Or maybe they sit off speed early. They may take a strike that is more of a pitcher’s pitch, or one they were not looking for. if you’re sitting fastball early, not a great idea to swing at a curveball. Or vice versa. Whatever the case, with two strikes, you have to think contact and productive at bat. For some, that approach may be sooner in the at bat, of the situation dictates it. There is no BABIP if there is not a ball in play. So luck plays no role in a strikeout. It seemed like the Orioles, as a whole, in 2024 were looking a certain pitch, and if the pitch was hittable they would hack. Even if it was just off the plate. Too many big swings, and tons of resulting misses, in key situations where shortening up a bit was the better approach. Lastly, not many of our guys are true “home run hitters.” What I mean by that is when Santander strikes out swinging at a piece ch with a big cut. I get it. That is his game to be focused on driving the ball. That is what he gets paid to do. Along with that comes a fair amount of swing and miss, and roll over ground balls. Not all our hitters should be having the same approach. Gunnar may hit 35-40 home runs in a season, but he is a much more dynamic hitter than just a “home run guy.” He is capable of doing anything on the field. He is extremely talented, and we have a few more that may fall into that category some day. There are times to adjust and take what the game gives you. Go oppo for a single, put pressure on the defense. This game is hard, but we can do better. If we are going to win, we must do much better.
