Sorry, you are right I'm not sure how Jake voted.

The union he was a member of decided to lessen the payments players not yet in the Union could receive.

I asked Guthrie about it on Twitter.

Do they get to stay in the union when they are forced into retirement?

Did Guthrie reply?

Yes, he was very polite.

I don't want to misrepresent what he said since it's been years, but we had a short dialog about it.

That’s unexpected but awesome at the same time.   I did like Guthrie when he was here.....

....and effective.

I was polite when I asked.  That may have played a part.

It just bugged me that the Union was trading away things that I didn't think they had any right to.

Reading this discussion I understand what happened, but I honestly did not know the major-league players created the slotting system. That is interesting.

They didn't create it.

But it was part of a collectively bargained agreement between the owners and the player's union.

It isn't surprising, we know the Union doesn't care about anyone not yet in the union and isn't open to expanding it.

So owners are wising up and players are pissed.

When my lady told me I couldn’t cheat it took some getting used to, I did some rage tweeting and listened to more wu tang than I would customarily.

I only wish the same rules applied to her.

I don't think he's saying collusion.

He's just pointing out the unequal distribution of revenue/how the owners are no longer overpaying for older players.

Some good discussion on that point---and the broader phenomenon of teams doing better risk management--- in this article:

This may be part of why teams have become more leery of free agency in general. The combined salaries of each team’s top-paid players totaled $680 million last season. But those players accounted for a middling 69.8 WAR, or $9.7 million per win over replacement level. Teams seem content to spread the risk in a sport loaded with uncertainty.
