The bullpen did not give up any Earned Runs over 5 Innings Pitched, making it possible for the offense to get back in the game.

RAYS ANNOUNCERS: )

In yesterday's win over the Royals, the Orioles' bullpen pitched 4 innings of no-hit, no-walk baseball.

That was only the 2nd time all season that the Oriole bullpen has done that ........ regardless of the innings pitched.

(AUGUST 27th)

Steve Melewski found a surprising statistic ........ the Orioles are 19-12 in games in which they have gotten a Quality Start for the season.

So yes, the bullpen does indeed stink ........ but perhaps they would be a little better if they had been getting more help from the starting rotation.

That said, Melewski also points out that the Orioles' .613 Winning Percentage when getting those Quality Starts only has them sitting at 12th out of 15 teams in the American League in said category ........ and that the average winning percentage in the American League this year for teams getting a Quality Start is .699.

Finally, the Orioles are 12-1 in their last 13 games of getting Quality Starts (which means that they were an abysmal 7-11 when getting Quality Starts prior to that.) So something somewhere appears to be improving as this 2nd consecutive nightmarish season evolves.

For the life of me, I don’t know why Melewski found any of that surprising.    The Orioles score 4.37 runs/game, so I’d expect them to win the majority of their games where the starter goes at least 6 innings and allows 3 ER or less.     And yet, since the Orioles are 26th of 30 teams in runs scored per game, and have a terrible bullpen, I’d expect them to have one of the worst records when pitching a quality start.

Not remarked on by Melewski: the Orioles’ 31 quality starts is tied for 28th out of the 30 major league teams.    The only team worse is the Angels.   So yeah, we win a decent amount when we pitch a quality start, but we only pitch one about 24% of the time, compared to a league average of 38%.

Offensive Runs/Game (AL average: 4.8)

11. TOR  4.47

12. BAL  4.37 (.43 worse than avg.)

13. KCR  4.23

14. CHI  4.22

Only .25 runs/game spread between the 11th and 14th teams, but then there's a .58 drop to

15. DET  3.64 (1.16 worse than avg.)

Team ERA (AL Avg. 4.60)

11. SEA  5.05

12. LAA  5.10

13. KCR  5.12

14. DET  5.16 (0.56 worse than AL avg.)

Only 0.11 difference in ERA between the 11th and 14th teams. But then there's a 0.68 jump to

15. BAL  5.84 (1.24 worse than AL avg.)

The O's offense is weak, but not that different from the Blue Jays, Royals, and White Sox. The pitching, on the other hand, is really really bad.

Since I'm on that page in Baseball-reference.com, the areas in which the O's offense ranks near the top in the AL: 2nd youngest (26.5 years); 4th in sac. bunts; 6th in stolen bases. That's it!

The all-time record for runs allowed by a bullpen is 407, by the 1930 Phillies (in 383 innings!).

The Orioles are sitting on 383.  So 25 more runs and they'll have another All Time Record in the books.

Which is both a commentary on how bad their bullpen is, and how many innings they’re throwing.

They are throwing a lot, but all of the top bullpen innings totals are recent.  The 1930 Phils threw 383 innings out of the pen, and their starters had an ERA of like 7.00.  The O's passed that innings total in July.  Those Phils had to have had an almost endless string of starts that were seven innings, five runs, eight innings, 10 runs, seven innings seven runs...

The 2018 Rays hold the all time record for bullpen innings, because of all the openers they used.  They were around 850 innings, this year's O's will probably be around 600 or so.

The Angels are on pace for their bullpen to throw 744 innings.

During the 1995 University of Maryland Open Softball League spring and summer seasons, a really tall guy named Greg pitched EVERY inning for my team of grad buddies. I don’t know how many, but it was a lot

Giggle, giggle. I’m sorry for wasting electrons, but that cracked me up.

The 1883 New York Mets of the American Association played a 97-game schedule and their bullpen threw zero innings.  Other teams had all complete games, but the '83 Mets did it in the longest schedule.

These things are such pearls. But it would be kind of funny if you had been making these historical nuggets up all these years. We would never know!
