Bowie Completes 7-run Comeback in 8-7 Stunner

Baysox eye sweep with 8th straight series win in hand.

BOWIE, Md. – Down 7-0, the Bowie Baysox completed the largest comeback of the season to defeat the Akron RubberDucks, 8-7, in front of 4,629 at Prince George's Stadium Saturday night.

Akron (4-8) took the opening lead for the third time in three games this series with a six-run second inning. Trenton Brooks and Li-Jen Chu hit back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches from RHP Marcos Molina to put the Ducks ahead 2-0.

The visitors loaded the bases with one out for Alex Call, who launched a grand slam to left field to increase the lead to 6-0. Nellie Rodriguez lined a two-out solo home run to left field in the third inning to tack on the extra point and give Akron a 7-0 lead.

Bowie (9-2) waited until the third inning to enter the home run derby, and they sent 10 men to the dish during a six-run frame to cut the deficit to 7-6. A walk, a single and a walk loaded the bases three batters into the inning for Ryan McKenna, who crushed a grand slam to left field to take the team lead in RBI (32) and tie Yusniel Diaz for the team lead in home runs (6).

That share of the top spot lasted five pitches, as Diaz gave the hosts back-to-back home runs with a solo shot down the line in left field. Four batters later, T.J. Nichting sent a rocket groundball under the dive of Rodriguez at first base to plate Rylan Bannon for the outfielder's 22nd RBI of the 2019 season.

The Baysox started their fifth inning in identical fashion to the third inning, loading the bases with a walk, a single and a second walk off LHP Anthony Gose. Facing new pitcher Ben Krauth, Jesse Valentin tied the game by drawing a four-pitch walk to score Diaz.

One batter later, a 6-4-3 double play allowed Carlos Perez to cross home with the go-ahead run. The Baysox stormed all the way to take an 8-7 lead after five innings after trailing 7-0, marking the largest comeback victory of the season.

The bullpen stepped up once again for Bowie, with RHP Francisco Jimenez allowing one run in four innings to earn his third win of the season. RHP Dillon Tate struck out five batters and stranded three runners on base during his three innings to earn his second save of the week.

Bowie aims for a four-game sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. LHP Zac Lowther (8-4, 2.03) takes the mound for Los Cangrejos Fantasmas de Chesapeake against Akron LHP Adam Scott (1-0, 4.26). Sunday is Latin Baseball Day at the ballpark, as well as the 1st Meet the Team Day before the game.

The Chrome Run Car Show and the Maryland Food Truck Festival take place in the parking lot, although you need a ticket to the game to access the Food trucks. After the game, 10,000 pieces of candy will fall from the sky during the annual Helicopter Candy Drop for kids ages 12 & under.

Frederick Keys News Release

For Immediate Release: June 29, 2019

CARRASCO CRUSHES KEYS

THIRD BASEMAN KNOCKS IN FOUR RUNS; KEYS GET THREE HITS

FREDERICK, MD. – Dennicher Carrasco battered the Frederick Keys (4-6, 33-46), ending a triple shy of the cycle and knocking in four runs in a 7-2 victory for the Wilmington Blue Rocks (6-4, 50-29) on Saturday night at Nymeo Field. With the score tied 1-1, Carrasco came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the third and lined a double into the right-field gap that cleared the bases and gave Wilmington a 4-1 lead. He also homered in the sixth. On top of that, the Keys offense was held to just three hits.

Wilmington jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Blake Perkins cracked a triple to deep center field and scored on a tapper up the first baseline off the bat of Brewer Hicklen.

The Keys answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Sean Miller singled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a throwing error from Carrasco on a sacrifice bunt. A batter later, Rito Lugo walked the bases loaded, and Miller was able to score on a fielder’s choice groundout from Trevor Craport to tie the game 1-1.

Lugo (2-2) settled in from there. The lefthander allowed two more to reach base over the next four innings. He struck out five, walked three and gave up two hits in five innings of work.

After a clean second inning, Blaine Knight struggled to find the strike zone in the third. Rudy Martin reached on an error at the start of the frame, but Knight walked two batters to load the bases with two outs. Carrasco then cleared them with a double and after another walk, Knight got out of the inning.

He rebounded to retire the next six batters in order. Knight (0-5) was dealt the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts over five innings. It is his fifth straight loss.

Carrasco hit his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning, and Nick Pratto slugged one over the center field wall with one man on in the eighth to give the Blue Rocks a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Keys would score one more in the bottom of the eighth on J.C. Escarra’s RBI groundout.

Miller finished with one hit while Robbie Thorburn tallied the other two for the Keys.

The Keys and Blue Rocks meet for the final time in the 2019 campaign on Sunday, June 30. RHP Cody Sedlock (4-0, 2.05) will start for Frederick opposite LHP Austin Cox (0-0, 1.69) for Wilmington. First pitch is schedule for 1:00pm with pregame coverage starting at 12:45pm on frederickkeys.com and the Tune In radio app.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. Following the 2018 season, the Keys were named the winner of the Carolina League’s Complete Franchise Award. • Lots of panic around here right now. Guys forget the Rangers were third in their division and only had 88 wins last season.
    • This is my favorite Basallo clip so far. The swing is so fluid, it looks so effortless and the ball is just absolutely destroyed. It reminds me of homers by prime Chris Davis.
    • The Orioles were bound to hit a rut. Get your hand off the panic button.    The Orioles aren’t signing Bauer. So just Fudget about him. The don’t need to trade Holliday and Kjerstad. I’m okay if he finds a guy worth paying a top guy return along with a few others ala Kirby, Gilbert, Castillo etc.   Stop patting yourself on the back. We lost as did everyone else to a hot Rangers team. We are still 7 up in the top wildcard slot. And as Texas proved is all you have to do is get in to have a shot.
    • It’s becoming unglued?  Because of losing streak that almost every team goes through in any given season?  Really?
    • The Os pen isn’t good. With DC out, they just don’t have any arms you want to rely on. They don’t miss a lot of bats, don’t get a lot of Ks and the walk rate is higher than you want it to be. Kimbrel is fine but nothing special. He has been exactly what I thought he would be and maybe even a little better than that but hes not what we had last year, which was special. Cano is better than a dime a dozen guy but not by a ton.    Baker looks good and maybe he’s poised to have the year some of us thought he would have in 2023 but he has a ways to go to prove that.
    • Yes, I bolded that part to indicate that was to what I was referring.
    • This group hasn’t burned you though. This is the biggest test for Elias since the team got good. The bottom line is the Os need pitching help and they have too much talent in the minors and too many subpar guys in the majors eating up at bats. You built this farm system up and are so proud of it and now it’s time to use it to its full potential.    I understand the Holliday injury likely sets him back until after the AS break, at least but assuming he’s hitting (which he has been or he’s been walking a ton) and once he is able to start throwing pain free, he needs to be up here.  Mayo needs to be up here yesterday.  It’s just time.  Sitting on ML ready top 10 prospects when below average MLers are playing in front of them just doesn’t make sense. You have a glaring weakness of too many lefties and a manager/GM that just won’t play lefties vs lefties. You have McCann playing way too much. Mayo needs to be up here right now. And then you need to use the rest of the system(and maybe ML team), not Basallo, and go get the pitching you need.
