It worked out OK for them but I don't think the Markakis deal is one we should be emulating.

Nick was worth six wins or so and was paid $44M.  If you say a win is $7M, then the contract was almost dead even.

But I'm not sure why you'd want to pay free agent rates for a player in his 30s who's worth less than two wins a year.  That's what they did with Trumbo, they should have learned their lesson.

You would hope they could spend some on 2021 with the idea that 2022 is a competition year no matter what.

Thats kind of splitting hairs.  So you dont want to spend anything this offseason, dropping salary by a lot.  There is only have $30M dedicated for next year,  so call it $45 or so all told.  Then you add how much in 2021?

To me a competitive 2022 team has a payroll around $120M.  And if you dont want to completely beholden to the 2022 free agent market that means you have to spend something in this next free agent market (2020).

Say you add $15 M this off season, $20M in 2021 and $30 in 2022.  That gets you about there.  And that can be (and should include) extensions for performing prearb players).

You could spend $0, $10, $50+, I guess?

No. No free agents. Buy some once you make the playoffs once.

No to any this year. No to Any next year. Then they can start to add payroll.

These two consecutive posts do not agree.  I can see the logic of the second one and believe that may be the path Elias takes. The first one would mean the rebuild hit on virtually every high risk player acquisition...or took an incredibly long time.

You are right. I am skirting in between those two approaches. I do not expect to see a 150 million dollar payroll from Baltimore again. That was an old man spending his son's inheritance.

I wish I had some idea of how the law firm was doing, and if it will survive Peter's eventual death.

Well you still have 2 years (15MM per) on Cobb. He will have to comeback next season to form to have any shot of moving him.

Thankfully Trumbo’s 12.5 MM falls off this year.

Davis and his 23MN per is around for 3 more after this. Unless he retires or agree to a buyout they are paying him no matter what.

so $38 next year, 38 in 2021, and 23 in 2022.

The Orioles will pay Davis but I think he won’t be on the roster and thus not counted as part of the payroll of the 25 man roster.   Cobb will likely be moved just as soon as he can demonstrate he can  pitch.

I don't think it will be that easy to move Cobb.

I dont understand why people keep inflating this, maybe to try and make a point?  The orioles payroll is $72 million. (29th).

I also don't understand why people expect it to go down.  Unless it is ownership driven, and I am talking about decreasing assets for sale, ownership driven.

I dont see why the Orioles shouldnt be adding players who can help their 5 top 100 prospects who should be here by late 2021 at the latest and therefore maintaining a salary in the 20-29th range.

This is where this thread started...look at the total for 2019.

And the slashed budget is the way this goes from what I understand of ME’s rebuild process...to maximize your flexibility and to hoard resources for when you need to deploy them.  Not to win anything...at all,

    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
