I'll be surprised if after more than two full seasons at AA if they promote Diaz that quickly.  I think that if they had any intention of a quick 2020 promotion he would have moved up to Norfolk at some point in 2019.

You may be right.  For sure I to an extent look at Diaz's 2019 as a senioritis year.  He certainly was worthy of the 2019 Orioles on pure baseball merit, even amid his scuffles.  Everyone knew the score.

We'll see how it plays out, but Yusniel Diaz being "awesome" in 2020 Spring Training is a narrative I keenly pre-expect.

Wasn't Stewart super hot in ST, only to get set down really early?

I don't think a hot ST makes any difference to Elias.

And Sisco had a great spring training and got sent down.

And Evan Phillips had an 0.00 ERA in spring training and got sent down.

Most of the board seems to think Diaz will be in the majors to stay in early 2020.  This year he was one of the better hitters on the BaySox and has never had a AAA at bat.  It wouldn't surprise me if he got fewer than 100 PAs in the majors next year.

I agree he won’t be rushed.    I’d even take the under on 100 PA.

And conversely, over the last decade or so several of the O's TOR pitchers regularly had horrible spring training stats and still be Opening Day starter.

Could be.

I think if they were doing anything other than slow rolling him he would have seen AAA last season.

I agree. He did have some injury issues but Diaz has 204 AA games. That’s 856 PA with an .834 OPS with two teams and across three separate seasons.

Elias slow played Diaz and Mountcastle a bit. It’s for the best long term.

Were the Orioles stupid and allow Hays to surpass his rookie status by playing him too much in September?  Dude could be a ROY candidate next year.

I am relatively certain they could not care less about that. Or RBI. Or Pitching Wins. In fact. This may save money. And that is what all of this is about.

He's at 128 AB, the cutoff is 130.

If he wins RoY that would cost the team money.  Better off having him lose eligibility this year.

I think Elias is hoping Hays boosts up the team's prospect ranking.
