At Friday's news conference, MacPhail said Klentak would lead the search for a new Phillies skipper.

"I don't think there's a relationship more important in a baseball organization than the manager and GM," MacPhail said. "If those two aren't simpatico, you really have issues. I believe it's John's and my goal that Matt go out and start the search. At the end, he's going to have to have the approval of John and I, just like with Gabe. John or I could have vetoed Gabe; we chose not to. But I can't imagine us hiring somebody that Matt is not fully on board with. John and I will have some influence on the guys that fit that criteria who we think might be the best fit, but it's got to emanate from the GM."

Showalter managed the Orioles though 2018 and is eager to manage again. Sources say he is intrigued by the Phillies job and has done homework on the roster.

Hm. I’d been convinced that Girardi was holding out for either the Cubs or Nationals job. But then, the former may already be set on someone (David Ross?) and the latter surely won’t be available anytime soon, so maybe time to expand the options and jump in now.

In any event, I wish Buck the very best wherever he takes his talents to next. Miss that guy.

“Phillies owner John Middleton has reportedly been polling players on their opinions of veteran manager Buck Showalter, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred.

“Heyman notes that Middleton did the same thing before firing Gabe Kapler, and that Showalter has the well-known links to Phillies president Andy MacPhail and other members of the front office.

“The only players on the Phillies current roster Showalter has previously managed are Jake Arrieta and reliever Tommy Hunter, who is a free agent this offseason.”

I doubt Arrieta is going to love the idea.

If it comes down to Arrieta, which it might, then im not sure Buck will be getting it.

Except that Arrieta has been a bit of an a-hole during his time in Philly, so his views may be discounted.

An owner directly polling his players about a managerial choice sounds a bit dysfunctional.   But maybe that’s just me.
