AFL Roster

Matusz is/will be on the 40-man roster, so he's not below AA.

Being on the 40 man roster and where they are in the minors are two different things.

Nolan Reimold will be added to the 40 man roster this September or November so he will technically be on the 40 man roster when he is in the AFL. Hayden Penn was in the AFL last year even though he was on the 40 man roster.

It looks like Cleveland has sent their top prospects for 1B and 3B, so Snyder is going to have to fight for playing time. The Indians 1B prospect, Beau Mills, was voted the Carolina League MVP and was selected as the al-star 1B over Snyder. The 3B propsect, Wes Hodges, was at AA this year. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080826&content_id=450525&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp

C Wieters - May - Mitchell

1B Mills - Snyder

2B

3B Hodges - Whittleman

SS DeJesus - Davis - McConnell - Rodriguez

LF Tracy - Reimold - Dickerson - Lambo

CF Borbon

RF McFall - Hoffman - Head

Noticing that Surprise Rafters has no 2B prospect.

Do they use a DH in this league?

I find Wieters inclusion a bit interesting, as I was under the impression he was winding down his first year in the organization, and would be shut down like most other minor leaguers at the end of their season. Curious.

He gets a chance to work with Gary Allenson (AAA manager)

No way should they be sending Wieters...They complain that he has caught more now than ever before and then they send him to Arizona, a league that is about the same level of competition he has already played in and dominated?
I don't think the "he has caught more now than ever before" argument was a legit argument for not bringing him up to Baltimore. It was just some BS excuse given because they can't say "we're keeping him down for financial reasons" which is very obviously the case.

And the AFL is a higher league than AA, so it'll be good to see him against that competition, although I still expect him to dominate.

Yes, its better but it is also a hitters league.

He will dominate there too.

Not really him for him to gain by sending him there, especially with what should be his first ML season this coming year, which is a longer season obviously.

True, the only benefit is seeing a few more advance pitchers. Not much to gain, but really not much to hurt either.

How many at-bats does Wieters have at AA and above? Just because he's done well for two months in AA is no reason to keep him from the AFL. One can review the experience and quality of prospects heading to the AFL and it is ridicously overcritical to claim Wieters should not go because he is too good.

A guess another group of posters would claim it would have been a slap in the face to MW if he had NOT been sent to the AFL if other teams send their best guys.

Whose roster is Matusz on? Orioles.com lists him on the O's 40 man, notes that he's not on the 25 man, and has no record of his being optioned to any of the minor league affiliates. So apparently he's not below AA - but he's not at or above AA, either. Maybe the Warehouse thinks it can save his fourth option by just being passive-aggressive and doing nothing...

    • Not for someone who has money riding on him winning the award.
    • Well, now that we’ve established the hitting sucks, is it a good time to complain that this pitching is obviously over performing and will crash and burn any day now?
    • The bullpen has much more depth this year than last year but it just feels like you don’t know who will be the guy each night.  Last year it was get to the 8th and you knew it was Cano and Bautista and lights out.  This year it doesn’t seem to be set roles especially with Kimberly strugggles and out as clasper for now possibly.  I also think Hyde gets a lot of grief about how he handles the bullpen but I think he has been great at looking at the game situation and with who he wants facing what guys.  Cano might come in the 6th one night then close the next, same with Webb or even Coulumbe.  I know a lot of it is analytics but as a group they make a plan and seem to stick with it instead of some managers that have 7 inning guy an 8th inning guy and closer and don’t deviate much.
    • On the replay you can see that Julio was lightly jogging after the ball-- either assuming the RF would get it, or assuming Hays wouldn't run. Good on Hays for taking advantage and turning it into a double.
    • I think in general people are more negative in life not just in sports and they need to blame someone or something.  In previous years we had a scapegoat in Peter and John.  Elias didn’t go out and make a trade it was because he didn’t have the money to go get anyone or the owner didn’t want to spend.  Now for the most part people seem to think new ownership will give the ok to spend more so now if we don’t do it it is on Elias, Sig, and Hyde for not getting best out of the players.  We dint make a big trade last year and most people just went with well John is cheap we don’t do what they want now it will fall on Elias more then last year in peoples eyes imo.
    • Mike Baumann.  An enigma wrapped in a conundrum.  Ride the wave!
    • The Yankees have been extremely healthy on offense as well.  If that somehow happens all year they will be right there with us but if I was a betting man I don’t think Judge, Stanton, Rizzo can stay healthy all year and they have very little depth behind those guys.  Besides Adley we have guys at every other position that can fill in if someone goes down.  There might be a drop some but I don’t think it would be catastrophic like losing Judge or Soto.
