I wonder if the O's are going to have Chen work more with his 4 seam like he did the first go around.  I know the Marlins had him throwing a 2 seam FB.

Well I moved Milone to the pen but not sure what I'm going to do with Kohl Stewart. I'll probably give him a few more starts to work out the kinks. He's probably better suited to the pen but we have a need!

WY Chen? This is a 2020 sim, right?

Fair question, is Chen the type of guy Elias and Sig would pick up? However, off waivers or trade or whatever...

What does he cost?  If you can get him on a one-year, $1M deal that might not be a bad pickup.  He's always allowed some homers, and last year with the superball he was kind of off the charts. I'd think that if he's healthy (which is really the primary question to answer), and with the ball deflated a bit, he could be a decent guy to fill some big holes in the rotation.

I let him go through waivers then signed him for $85K bonus and a pro rated major league minimum so well around $600k.

And that leads to the question, is this sim supposed to imagine what Elias and Sig would do, or to see what Tony can do with the same ingredients to start the season, with free reign to vary the recipe from there?

I am trying to do what I think Elias can and would do. As much as I would have released Chris Davis on opening day, I don't think Elias is allowed to release him until after the season. What I want to do is have a roster crunch where I need to add guys and have no more place to hide Davis like I'm currently doing. I'm thinking around two month a into the season would have been a good time that if Davis is an absolute zero, and he's been an absolute zero, that Elias might have been able to plead the case that he needs to roster room.

As for other moves, I'm trying to acquire arms that can extend a bit so my bullpen isn't always so worn out without giving up real prospects. I'm also looking to upgrade areas with players 27 years old or younger who may be able to help down the road.

The sim is based on his two last years worth of results.

Didnt he come into camp, in different shape and was hitting better in ST?

Granted that is no guarantee he is better than was he has been.

But, we cant assume he isnt either.

For it, its a wait and see, and then we can complain about releasing him again. :)

Davis might be better, who knows, or he may have been hot over a very small sample size against sub-par pitching. I think the last 2-3 years of stats are much more indicative of the kind of success he was going to have this year. I do think Davis is bigger and stronger this year and looks a lot more like the guy who used to hit bombs, but saying that, he'd have to prove it to me during the regular season over a sustained period before I'd think he was "fixed".

I agree, but there is a smidgen of hope here, and we haven't seen any over the last 2-3 years.

I am not holding my breath, and I am not out betting the house payment money.

I dont even like the odds, maybe 35-65 that he is improved. Some would think my odds are too high.

At this point, all I want to hear is "PLAY BALL"

Thing is there is just such a space between improved and serviceable ballplayer for Davis.

    • She’s awful.  I wouldn’t take anything she says to mean anything.
    • This Twitter thread is interesting. A lot of things track. I generally think she doesn’t know much but she does seem to know people around the team. She’s also been a Hyde defender.
    • I feel like they did it to entice pitchers on short-term deals to come here and now have their stats blow up.
    • Here was the Wheeler extension from this past spring - he is finishing 2024 under the terms of his original 2020-2024 contract, so these are guarantees Middleton and Dombrowski made blind to whether Wheeler would hit any health bumps in 2024. Wheeler 5.30.1990 is 4 plus years older than Burnes 10.22.1994, but has a ton more October achievement, including 7 shutout innings this afternoon.    30 Swings and Misses!!! 3 years/$126M (2025-27) signed extension with Philadelphia 3/4/24 25:$42M, 26:$42M, 27:$42M
    • It wasn’t Cowser and Ortiz for Burnes..it was Cease.  And at that time, they did have to give that to get him, clearly. I never wanted to lose Urias for nothing. And yea, I wanted to trade some of our vets and play the kids…and put more emphasis on the pitching staff. I wanted Hays gone and wanted Mounty gone.   And it was definitely you but whatever.
    • I don't remember those conversations.  I pegged them at 90-95 wins in the poll, so there's no way I wouldn't have believed they could win 88 games.  Which of course they didn't, even with the injuries and underperformance. The biggest thing I remember arguing with you about last off-season was that we didn't need to give Ortiz and Cowser up to get Burnes and it would be foolish to give up them both.  I specifically argued that we didn't need to trade Ortiz as we could find a place for him to play, specifically citing the likelihood of injury. I really think you're thinking about somebody else.  I'm also not sure why you think you were one of the voices arguing for "depth" as you were willing to lose Mateo and Urias for basically nothing, and they both contributed to this team and were a bulwark against injury/underperformance.  You were willing to trade Cowser and where would we have been without him? This team's performance this year was well within the boundaries of what I expected, if a bit on the lower end.  The only thing confusing to me about it was what happened to Rutschman. That said, my "confusion" is what is the best path forward.
    • I think he’s getting somewhere around $180 million
