I’m glad DJ Stewart is having a moment

Even if you put the qualifier at 10 PAs Stewart has the highest OPS in a full season with a BA under .200.  Of course that's full seasons, so many others had runs like this in partial seasons.  Just much harder to search for.

Thx for the research. DJ also heads that list for OPS/BA ratio, at 5.68 - except for Dick Nen who had one HR and 3 BB with his 8 AB. BTW, good call @Brooks The Greaton the Rob Deer comp, on the list twice.

Folks around here talk about Hays like he's a sure thing if he can only stay healthy.

I don't see how he is.

He was bad in 20 games in 2017.

He was good in 21 games in 2019.

He was bad in 19 games in 2020.

Well, then he should be good in 20ish games next year!

I agree he hasn’t really established a level of play yet.   I still believe in the guy, but he’s not proven anything at this point.

Ryan Mountcastle was asked in last night's presser: Have you ever seen DJ Stewart as hot as he is now.

Ryan's response:  I don't think I have have seen anyone has hot as DJ is now.    However, he did have a pretty hot month last year at Norfolk.

DJ's May 2019 stats at Norfolk are 70 at bats,  5 HR,  28 RBI   457/518/886/1403.

When he's hot, he's HOT.

Look, if Santander could play center and open up RF for Diaz/Stewart, I would be all for it.  I just think Hays is our best option in CF right now, no offense to Mullins.

I'm not disagree that he's currently the best option.  I'm just stating that we might not have a good option for Center Field right now.

I agree with that.  I think a lot of the Hays hype is based on the 19 game stretch last year, the incredible minor league season he had in 2018, and our hopes that he becomes a stalwart here.  It is surprising to see how poor his offensive numbers were, though.  I felt like he played much better than a .519 OPS and a -0.2 WAR in general.

That’s what got him promoted on 5/28/19.     As I recall, we had a couple of other guys at Norfolk (Sisco and Mountcastle I think) who were also crazy hot that month.

(Edit: Sisco 1.151 OPS, Mountcastle .889 OPS in May 2019 at Norfolk.)

Can't argue with that.   But at the same time, I don't think Hays and Mullins have proven they aren't going to be MLB CFs either... not to the point where we view it like SS as a position where we appear to have an upcoming organizational hole.   The short season and the injury mean that the "finding out" period on Hays is going to have to take place in 2021.   As for Mullins -- I suspect he is not going to be a topnotch starting CF in the majors.   Although he could possibly have a Jackie Bradley type of career.   Bradley has put up an OPS+ of higher than 102 once in his career when playing over half a season, but he's still been worth 16 WAR.   I think we'd all be happy if Mullins could do that but he has a lot to prove yet.

Mullins' problem is that complete inability to hit right handed.  The Orioles are going to have to find someone who can play CF and hit lefties if Mullins is part of the long-term solution.

Maybe it'll be some kind of Hays/Mullins platoon, but more like Lowenstein/Roenicke.  Lowenstein almost never played against lefties, but Roenicke played quite a bit against right-handers.

Or since we're talking about centerfield, where I assume platooning has been less frequent, Blair / Snyder in 1966-67.

So, 5 home runs in 4 days for Stewart.   Does anyone know how to figure out how often that has happened in the history of baseball?    I’d guess it happens no more than half a dozen times per season, but I could be wrong about that.

It's happening (or very similar) pretty much right now.

Wow, he must be a really good player to put up an OPS like that.  I wonder what Boston is doing in their version of Bowie?

He was the BA #75 prospect.  Which seems strange for a 25-year-old first baseman with a 30% strikeout rate in the minors who just made his MLB debut.

All I know is I'm keeping an eye on whether or not he'll homer once a game for the rest of his career.

    • I was listening to a Fox Sports Radio broadcast (sorry, can't remember who it was). They put the teams into tiers. The O's were in the top tier along with the Yankees, Dodgers and Phillies. I don't know how long it's been that during the season, someone would have called us top tier. And to think, this is happening with two of our starters out for the year and Bradish and Kremer have spent time on the IL. We are doing this with Hays, Mullins, Urias and Santander starting the season on an extreme slump. We have done this with Mateo starting almost every day (which most people thought would be a horrible thing). We have done this with a bullpen that has been very inconsistent. Imagine if we get some of this stuff fixed and some people back to just playing to their career averages.
    • I'm not sure what we are doing with Vieira. I figured the trade was about the prospect and they had to take him and his salary to make it happen. I expected him to be DFA right away and they would try to send him to the minors to work on him.
    • What would differentiate them?
    • Btw, in the 4 game series against the Jays last year (July 31-Aug. 3rd), it is insane that Mountcastle hit for an .846(!) avg with an OPS of 1.932!
    • Vieira doesn’t have options.
    • May 2024 This month, two non-prospects were obvious choices for MiL Plsyer and Pitcher of the Month: Player of the Month 28-year old Daniel Johnson led the org in SLG, OPS, HR (tie) and RBI.  He hit .350/.439/.725 with 6 HR and 23 RBI pm In the prospect division, I’m going with 19-year old Leandro Arias, .333/.400/.667 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 16 games.   Honorable mentions to Ellis Cuevas at .992 OPS, Heston Kjerstad .964 with 14 RBI in 16 games after returning to the minors, and Stiven Acevedo at .953.   Pitcher of the Month In between stinking up the major leagues, 27-year old Jonathan Heasley pitched 16 scoreless innings with an 0.813 WHIP. In the prospect division, 21-year old Edgar Portes pitched to an 0.42 ERA in 20.2 innings, with an 0.919 WHIP and 11.8 K/9.   Honorable mentions: Eccel Correa 0.96 ERA in 18.2 IP, and Trey Gibson with a 1.76 ERA, 1.044 WHIP, and 15.3 K/9 in 15.1 IP.
