Talk about a terrible outing: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, 4 WP.  ERA blew up to 5.65.

My sources stated that Memphis was using different balls. Pitchers were having a difficult time getting a good grip.

Bradish threw 5.1 innings tonight allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks.   Only one strikeout.

My sources tell me that Bradish was told to specifically work on change ups for this game and to not worry about k’s.

He’s been pretty good in his last four outings, allowing just 3 runs in 17.1 IP.   Norfolk ERA down to 4.34.

I know for a fact that Bradish likes throwing to Adley. Ruschman is an outstanding defensive catcher that gives pitchers lots of confidence to throw hard.

Everyone is always focused on the pitcher, ignoring how the quality of the catcher can impact a pitchers confidence and consequently his performance.

All catchers on Norfolk are NOT equal.

Apologies if you’ve mentioned before, but are you related in some way to Bradish? Do you know if some of his initial struggles in AAA were due to the different ball? Seems like he’s settling nicely.

You’re doing a great job out there Kyle!

This is why baseball teams are transitioning more towards openers. There are way more guys that can go 3-4 innings, then can go 6+

What I have noticed is that the way that many younger pitchers have been taught with their warm-up routines seems quite a bit different than even 10 years ago. It seems to me that today’s pitchers actually throw more during pregame than in past years. Throwing into a pad, then throwing long ball, then bull pen work, etc.

All of those throws have got to add up and may be affecting the length of their outing.

As you stated, it seems like everything is getting more specialized to the point that it is an anomaly to have a pitcher throw a complete game, so you now have a starter, a middle reliever and a closer.

It would be difficult to speculate. There are so many moving parts for any player transitioning from one league to another, or a team that you had relationships with to another team who may all be strangers. Certainly a new type of ball might be an issue, but none of these players live in a vacuum. In the best circumstances there is going to be a lot of pressure in many directions which might take some time for adjustment.

What I can say is that Bradish is a really smart young man with an outstanding work ethic. No matter the situation, he will figure out what needs to be done and will work his tail off to in order to achieve it.

He's got closer potential but I assume they'll keep him as a starter going into next year.   He certainly shows the potential to start as well but he hasn't been able to deep into games (this year that would be finishing 6) or be consistent in AAA.

I feel pretty good about Bradish helping us in the future. His command issues will dictate whether it's as a reliever or a starter. He has the raw stuff to be a starter. To my (amateur) eye, he actually has pretty good command when he gets out over his front foot. His pitches are sharp and he can locate down. When he doesn't get on top, he elevates. For his FB, that leaves him way up and out of he zone which is pretty harmless because aint' nobody swing at a ball that high. But for his off speed stuff that tendency leaves him up in the zone and very hittable. So while he didn't walk anyone yesterday, his command was still pretty lacking. Interestingly, when he has to buckle down and make a good pitch, the timing issue that I'm talking about seems to disappear and he makes good pitches. So maybe that bodes well for the future since he seems to be able to correct his elevation issues when he focuses on it. He was still throwing 94-96 on the FB, so his velocity is still where it was when I first saw him this spring.

    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
    • i think we all are going to have ptsd from that 9th inning for a while,it was that brutally bad . they need to do some special to get us to forget about it
    • wow,did gunnar and adley have to do this last season?
    • I suggested that earlier but I think it's probably a bad play with no out. The O's have like 85% probability of scoring. There is a huge downside risk of Mullins popping up the bunt for a double play. He could also whiff on the bunt making at least Holliday an easy out. With one out and only 65% probability of scoring it's a much better play. I think if Santander and Mullins were reversed in the lineup Hyde may have done it but not when you have two shots to get the run in.
