2021 Draft Thread

Recommended Posts

I’d say I’m annoyed by our draft so far. Cowser is fine, and I really like Norby. Trimble is somewhat exciting too. But I’m confused by all of the seemingly flawed and/or mediocre college seniors we’re taking. I’ll admit that I didn’t like the Westburg pick last year though and so far have been proven thoroughly wrong.

Reserving judgement, but yea, I’m annoyed.

First pitcher taken by O’s in last three drafts:

In round eight in 2019 after eight position players were selected.
In round five of 2020 after five position players.
In round five of 2021 after five position players.

It’s weird.  In Elias’ 7 years with the Astros, they picked a pitcher 1st four times.   I count 19 pitchers selected by the Astros in the first 5 rounds of the draft in those years.  So it doesn’t seem like he came to Baltimore with an inherent philosophy of preferring to draft hitters over pitchers.

Yikes. Great idea to only look at one position at a time ?

Well, I don’t think that’s exactly what he’s saying, but that’s essentially what they did in 2019.  In rounds 11-20 they chose 8 pitchers.

What are everyone's thoughts on some of the higher ranked guys still on the board? Do the Orioles take a chance on someone like Will Taylor or Chase Burns despite obvious signability concerns? Willems seems to be the only overslot guy so far so I would imagine there's still plenty of money to spare. I would love to see another high upside pick.

My guess is that the plan is to draft a bunch of HS pitchers that have slipped to Day 3 due to signability concerns, using the savings from Cowser and the college seniors to sign a couple of them.   I'm not sure if this strategy actually ever works--I recall the O's doing this on several occasions in the past but I don't recall any of those overslot pitchers ever working out.
