A trade exercise

Holt just had Akin pitch only from the stretch.  It seems to be working so far.  But we need to see more to know if it helps Akin turn the corner.

Lopez was a unsuccessful pitcher when the O's claimed him. Holt has changed the way he approaches hitters.   They needed him in the rotation but now he looks like he could be an asset in the pen.  He has gotten the confidence to go right at hitter with his stuff.

To me Holt is sorting through pitchers.  He will help some to become part of the O's future.  Others pitchers will leave.   Holt is in no danger of leaving.   He is part of the O's core management team.

1. Gallen - I think you've correctly identified Gallen as a trade candidate, but I don't see the O's matching the price tag for him. He'd require a Berrios-type return. I see him going to a contender.

2. Skubal - The Tigers are a half-way decent team at the moment and Skubal is part of a pretty promising rotation for them. I see the Tigers adding in an effort to compete starting this offseason.

3. JT Brubaker -  I don't see a lot to love here, see below:

I can't see giving up some of our best prospects for some unimpressive starting pitchers.  That would be like training for Bundy (if he wasn't an O) after he lost his top prospect status and was looking like a #4 starter.  When the O's are "ready to win", shown by them having a .500 record or better and a lot of young, improving ML players, then it will be time to trade for a pitcher.  The pitcher they trade for will hopefully be a young pitcher who is at least a #2 pitcher (Snell comp would be ideal)  Obviously take multiple top prospects to trade for that pitcher, but that's part of the reason you build up a farm.

We should be looking to deal position players/relief specialists off the current MLB roster. Mancini, Santander and Hays. Our next good team will feature an OF of Mullins with Stowers, and Cowser manning the corners.

Maybe this offseason isn’t the right opportunity, but next trade deadline is, but it’s time to start dealing bats for arms. Hopefully Mancini, Severino, Hays, and Santander, finish strong.
