What’s your OPS and WAR/162 prediction for Rutschman next year?

I think he’ll put up .280/.370/.450/.820 next year after getting called up in May. Not sure how that translates to WAR but I’d guess about 4.

This is almost dead on what I was thinking.  Of course, I now think you're a genius!  .820 and 3.8 rWAR/162 is what I was thinking.

Adley Rutschman currently has a .936 OPS in AAA (38 games) following .901 in AA (80 games).   Let’s have your predictions for his OPS as a rookie next year.

While we’re at it, take a shot at rWAR/162.   We’ll do that based on what percentage of the 162 games Rutschman is on the O’s roster, not the number of games he plays.   So, if he was called up after 40 games and posted 3.0 rWAR the rest of the way, that would be 4.0 rWAR/162.

I’ll go first: .817 OPS and 3.1 rWAR/162.

It seems likely that if his OPS is that high, his WAR would be higher.

Probably but it also depends on when he comes up, since WAR is largely a counting stat.

Thats the hidden part of this conversation.  When do the Os bring him up?  Is it all season?  Is it as soon as the extra year kicks in?  Is it into May?  Is it after super 2 (usually late May/early June)?

The exercise if for rWAR/162.

Frobs kind of covered that by making it a rate, so it is WAR/162.

However, the conversation really probably becomes, how much does he catch?

If he catches 95% of his abs, and puts up that OPS, he'll be well above 3 WAR.

If he catches 60%, that's probably about right.

Btw, I think people thinking he’s not going to catch a lot are wrong.  There is no reason not to catch him a lot.  The best catchers catch a lot and do it from the time they enter the league.  Adley shouldn’t be any different.

I agree with this.

    • Good call for Hyde to pick his spot and get tossed there. Middle game of a three game series. It was a one run game at the time. He had to fire up his team a bit and set the ump straight for the 2nd half of the series.  It wasn’t an act of desperation, but really good strategy. Now we play a rubber game and the umps are on notice.  I bet Cowser feels like Hyde has his back too.
    • I love this dude. He’s Nelson Cruz 2.0 out there. Big dude. Probably would hit bombs like Cruz if we didn’t have the new LF and WALL.  He’s our Jeff Conine/Delmon Young “Professional hitter”.  We don’t need 6 years of service from him. Just 3 months.  Ceiling. Just like Mayo. Ceiling.
    • Mayo will be ok. Holliday is the exact example of why you put up with a guy struggling a bit. We’re trying to win a World Series. Mayo’s bat and potential offer that ceiling.  We can throw a Urias/Davis platoon out there for a .700ish OPS and decent defense. That’s there. That’s not going anywhere.  Or… We can live with some Mayo growing pains and he’s got the bat to be an ALDS/ALCS/WS MVP. That’s the ceiling we need.  The rest of the lineup is going to have to carry him while’s he’s adjusting.  Might as well just give up if you hit traffic in the morning on the way to work. Gotta suffer through stuff a bit sometimes to reap the rewards.
    • September is all that I’ve heard. I did a quick search on Twitter. No news.
    • He’s this year’s Webb. It just shows how talented players are that are struggling in the MLB or AAA. Some minor adjustments and they can become valuable role players. Relievers are fickle. Gotta ride the hot hand.  I like what Burch Smith brings. Good find. Dare I say, Brach like with the 4 pitch mix out of the pen?  A poor man’s Brach?
    • I really like Ryan Ripken. His instagram is really good. He does short breakdowns of all things O’s.  https://www.instagram.com/ryanripken?igsh=NnQzcnE3c3g0MG51 https://m.youtube.com/@RYANRIPKENMEDIA He’s on 105.7 a lot too.  He’s really improved over the last few years since he started doing this full time it seems.  Good stuff. Back to Holliday, I’m worried about my Cowser ROY bet.  Holliday is +7500 currently for those who care.
