Well from previous attempts at "competition", it is obvious the owners and players need each other.  The players starting their own league w/o the owners would be laughable.  The last major strike I remember had the players organizing what looked like pickup softball games.  I can't remember what the owners organized, if they did anything.  If they did, it would be a few guys from the neighborhood having a game with a group of guys across town in a major league park.
