A weekly check on the minors, 2022

Should probably note that the Eastern League, South Atlantic League and Carolina League base their playoff bracket on the teams that win each half season. As such, Aberdeen has already qualified for the playoffs having won their division in the first half and Bowie at 7-5 is only 1 game behind Altoona for the second half division lead.

At least De Los Santos and Basallo are coming around for Florida Orioles.

The Orioles Black have a couple of guys worth watching.  Estrada and Ramos.

The Orioles Orange are just a wreck.

I wonder if they will continue to carry 2 DSL teams in the future.  19 clubs still carry 2 teams.  Orioles don't have the chops to staff 2 competitive teams.

Once the draft happens, there will be a bunch of warm bodies to run through there.

Almost every player that makes up Delmarva, FCL O's and the DSL team have been acquired by the Elias regime.

Their combined record of 63-129 is abysmal. Winning in the minor leagues does not always show the talent of a team, but to say they have played overmatched player at these levels is a understatement.

Delmarva has played and pitched several players this year that have no business even being in professional baseball and definitely not in A-ball. Grant, it, Elias barely drafts high school players so that is part of it, but the other is that his Latin American investments have not done well overall.

Basallo is the one of the three Million bonus babies who has done well offensively. Maikol Hernandez is completely lost at the plate in the FCL at 18-years old which is not a good sig at all. Tavera remains in a deep slump since starting out the year ok. The emergence of Bencosme and Estrada are nice, but overall the Latin American players have been underwhelming and have contributed to these awful records.

Haven't these Latin American players been "what's left" as we came into the fray years after the best picks (and their families) had made informal commitments to organizations who've been there all along?

I'd been thinking we'd have to wait a good 10 years after sending our scouts down there in what, 2018? before seeing any great pickups there, unless we got some in trades.  No?

(Was also thinking things might be better for us to even the playing field if the International Draft was put in place, but now that that's fallen through, doesn't matter.)

This last group signed was with the Orioles having pretty much equal ground with other teams. Before that, yes, they were in catch up phase. Saying they have been pretty good at identifying the late bloomer talent in Bencosme and  Juan De Los Santos.

I agree with that assessment.  Therefore, the poor performance of Delmarva and the FCL team don’t bother me too much, as both are dominated by our Latin American signees from classes we expected to be substandard.   I’m disappointed with the DSL teams, though, especially the hitters.   But as you say, it’s more about finding a few nuggets than the overall performance.
