Um, small sample size.  McKenna also OPS'ed close to 1.200 in about 100 at bats in AAA a couple of years ago.  David Newhan looked like an inner circle Hall of Famer for a month.  etc, etc.

But isn't judging him on this year's performance and deciding he is useless, JUST as small a sample size?

I'm trusting the eye test.  He looks lost at the plate.  Maybe another team will take a chance on him and he will bring something with the bat, but I doubt it.

Not that it matters, but who is the utility guy now?  Owings had the skill of doing many things poorly.

We have 4 infielders for the 3 non-1B infield spots at the moment:  Urias, Odor, Nevin, Mateo.

Urias and Nevin have both played 3B.

Urias and Mateo have both played short.

Urias, Mateo, and Odor have both played 2nd.

So we do have a backup at each position.

Have to bring an additional position player up by June 20, so this situation is somewhat temporary.   And it could be sooner.

Look, I'm not trying to defend him, but anyone who says it was idiotic of our management to bring him in at all for the utility infielder role because he is "obviously" worthless is using a heck of a lot of hindsight.

Owings career OPS+ is 72.  Last year was obviously an outlier.  2018, the last year he had near full time at bats, his OPS+ was 53.  I understand his exit velocity has been extremely low this year, so it's not just bad luck.  I guess you could hope that there was some improvement in his bat from last year, but 44 at bats is extremely small.  Barely 10 games worth.

If you can find a really meaningful difference between Owings and Willie Bloomquist I'd be surprised. Bloomquist spent 14 years in the majors as a utility guy.  78 OPS+.  1.7 WAR.

In a world where teams keep 12, 13, 14 pitchers someone has to be able to play like five positions adequately and not whine about sometimes getting 14 at bats a month.

Lenn Sakata had a 71 OPS+.  Jeff Reboulet a 72.

I'm thinking they add Martin. He's earned another shot and at least brings some speed for late in the game pinch running.

I'm not sure why it took until June for the O's to understand they can just have Urias slide to SS if needed instead of carrying dead weight on the roster.

With Urias now as the regular third baseman, it makes it harder. When they were carrying Gutierrez it made NO sense to have Owings on the roster. I'm thinking they bring up Martin to replace Owings.

And they had him playing CF again last night.  Only 2 games there last year, and this is the first time this year.

(Which seems to be a trend - in AA they've been switching Graffanino from IF to OF, same with Cullen.)

With Vavra, Westburg and Henderson in Norfolk, the only way that Martin is going to get at bats on a regular basis is if he learns to play on the grass.  I doubt Martin would start over any of the others at the MLB level.  His only path forward at the ML level is as a multi-positional utility player.

    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
    • What if they don’t want to be extended?
    • I don't want the O's to lose much, but I do want there to be a massive streaming deal with Amazon or some other company the O's are left out of.  This blackout nonsense is bullsh!t. 🤬
