Gold Glove Finalists being announced -- Urias at 3B, Cedric in CF, but no Mateo or Adley

At the link below, they are adding the positions as they are announced.   As I post this, they have done every position but the outfields, and there are no Orioles on the lists yet.   The page is being updated as the info comes in so by the time you read this the outfielders may have been added too:

CORRECTION:  they hadn't added the 3rd basemen either when I posted this, and Urias did in fact make the cut at 3rd.

Correction:   They hadn't added 3rd base either when I first posted.   And Ramon Urias did get a nomination at 3rd.

What a joke that Mateo wasn't even a finalist.

I haven't looked at the selection criteria in a number of years. It certainly appears that they haven't updated it to include OAA, many of the finalists are ranked quite poorly by Statcast.  At first base none of the three AL nominees are higher than 12th in MLB, with Guerrero and Rizzo in the mid 20s. 

If the process doesn't include (by far) the best defensive metric they're doing it wrong.

But excluding Mateo is head-scratching on many fronts.  Not only did he lead the AL in OAA, but was second in the AL in Rfield and was +8 by UZR.

Clearly the world has passed the Gold Glove process by once again.  I'd had such high hopes when they overhauled it from "randomly ask a bunch of coaches to free-associate guys they remember making good plays" to one actually involving subject matter experts and metrics.

I remember the year they posted the eventual winner first instead of in alphabetical order.

I did a post a week or so ago that looked at how all the top candidates did on OAA, Rdrs, Rtot and UZR.   It seems to have disappeared.  Suffice it to say Mateo was at the top if you just combined all four equally, and ranked highly on all four measures.  It’s a travesty that he isn’t a nominee.

I will say, I am a bit disappointed in the Orioles lack of a hype machine for guys that could be up for awards.  Granted, I might have missed something but I've not seen anything anywhere on Twitter, Instagram, e-mail about how Mateo should be up for a GG.  Or Adley.  Saw some light Adley for ROY stuff but I feel like they just caved to the Julio Rodriguez machine.
