Which winter meeting contracts would you have matched or beaten and why?

I'd have beaten:

Verlander

Josh Bell

Andrew Heaney

Gives us a true ace, a switch hitter who can DH and give Mountcastle a day off here and there, and a 2-3 in the rotation when healthy. All signed 2-3 year deals with options so it wouldn't hurt the future. Would just require the Angelos family to invest in payroll (and our payroll would still be in the bottom third).

Not part of the question but I'd also sign Jean Segura to a 1 year deal if possible though I'm up in the air on that. I'm not confident about 2B right now. I'd also consider trading for Pablo Lopez. If we made those moves this is a team that can compete for a WS with a bottom half payroll (probably bottom third) with no long term 11 year contracts hanging over our heads.

Instead, we have Kyle Gibson and Franchy Cordero.

Cot's now has details on Andrew Heaney's escalators in his "2/25" contract.     Curious to see whether Manaea could command any of these kind of perks.

I think they net to 1/16 if he makes 140 IP, and then a guarantee of at least 2/36 if he makes 150 IP, and his arm is still attached to his body this time next year.     Looks like a 71/29 mix for 2023 alone between the 12.5 base and 5 bonus.

  • 2024 player option increases to $20M if Heaney:
    • pitches 150 innings in 2023, and
    • does not have an injury that would prevent him from being on the active roster within 60 days of Opening Day 2024
  • 2023 performance bonuses: $750,000 for 100 innings pitched. $1.25M for 120 IP. $1.5M each for 140, 160 IP.

Last 3 Years - Manaea ~390 IP, Heaney ~270 IP.

On the Manaea-Gibson-Lyles level, I believe the Innings are what the Clubs want - they know the ERA could be 5.25 or 4.25.     They carry water so LeBron can max out his minutes in the playoffs, or you don't have to hurt poor Grayson Rodriguez.

Heaney more boom bust.

Gibson career ERA - 4.52
Lyles career ERA  - 5.10
Manaea career ERA - 4.06

Based on their career stats I think Manaea is a level above Gibson and Lyles.

Which would I have matched or beaten...

Honestly, maybe none of them? Could make an argument for matching Taillon or Manaea, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Would have matched or beaten Senga but again, he was never coming here. He wanted to leave Japan and play for one of the "famous" American teams, which is fair from his perspective. We were never on his list, if he even knows the Orioles exist at this point.

Certainly would not have matched Turner, that's an absolutely unhinged deal but hey good for Philly.

Walker was also a bonkers deal, not sure I'd spend $70 mil on him.

Verlander is obviously chasing another ring, and maybe there would have been no convincing him that the O's were the best place for that, but I would have beaten the Mets offer and made him turn it down. I would have given a lot of thought to matching the DeGrom offer as well, even though that went a couple of years past where I would have hoped. Both come with a lot of risk, but guys like those two just don't hit the market very often, and the match with the team's needs and current payroll flexibility would have been too much to ignore.

We’ll find out.  You never know how the Japanese pitchers will translate over here.  The O’s are certainly in a better position to make an informed decision about that than we are.  They may have liked him, they may not have.  It’s also not clear that Senga had any interest in playing outside of NY or the West Coast.  All that said, I would have liked to have had him at that price.

There are never guarantees. But, I think he will be fine and think it was worth the stretch

He might have some command issues. But the raw stuff is good.

His K-9 is 9.8 with a BB of 3.0. Lots of no contact plate appearances. The WHIP was 1.05which is pretty impressive. While I expect the numbers to inflate overall, his whip has been pretty consistent since 2019.

Not sure Senga was going to play for the Orioles. But with the payroll so low ,could have front loaded the contract. $ 21 mm. ,the first two years. $11 mm. the last three years when payroll should probably be higher with some of the prospects hitting arbitration or maybe some extensions.

Yes … Would’ve he talked to us is the question. I’d rather have him at 17.5 per than the big name at 30ish per.
