Eastern shore MD is some of the cheapest water front property available in the US.  If he’s a country boy, as I imagine he is, he will like the area.  Imagine having a nice duck hunting lodge could be quite attractive, and as you mentioned a solid way to diversify.  Have to imagine Boras schools his clients on that.

A funny line from the podcast.  The hosts said they’d asked Hall, “if I was duck hunting in the woods, what advice would you give me?”   And Hall responded “I’d ask you what you were doing in the woods.”

Just listened to the interview.   For those who want to listen but skip the hosts’ earlier discussions of the prospects lists, the interview begins at about the 29:30 mark and runs about 50 minutes.  It’s a very fun interview and Grayson was very relaxed talking with these guys.

@wildcardcovered the highlights but there were three interesting tidbits he didn’t mention:

- Grayson has a younger brother who also pitches and is 6’7” as a 14-year old high school freshman.

- When Grayson was a high school sophomore, he was throwing around 95 mph.  Then early his junior year, he broke his hamate bone on his pitching hand while hitting a pitch that jammed him, but didn’t realize it was broken.  He pitched the rest of the season with tape on the wrist of his pitching hand, and was only throwing 90-92, so scouts weren’t very interested in him.  It was only after the season he found out he had a broken bone.   The next spring, he was throwing 98.

- For most of his senior year, he was expecting to get drafted 3rd/4th round.   It was only in the last week before the draft that he realized he might be a late first round/early second round pick.  He was completely surprised when the O’s picked him 11th.

He sounds like a really fun guy and I’m looking forward to seeing him against big league competition.

Rodriguez was outstanding scouting by Rajsich and his team.

And at the same time, probably wouldn't be what he is today without Elias and his team.

In the old scouting director versus player development personnel argument, I have to think the scouting directors were much more right than wrong. I feel bad for the guys drafted into this org from the early 80's until Elias.

Very true. The difference in development is staggeringly different.

And likewise, it feels like Jordan and Rajsich brought some decent talent into the org, but not with very good results after the player dev side took over. Maybe not as consistently as Elias' team has though.

    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Cowser and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look, maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts next week. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possibly Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
    • Is there any chance of the Orioles catching any of the teams in front of them with large crowds over the weekend?
    • Wells and Cowser are neck and neck in terms of fWAR. Could go either way
    • Joey Ortiz was in the running for the National League ROY for a while, but there’s too many other guys. However, he will almost certainly be a gold glove finalist, and the Brewers are all very happy to have him. I hope Colton wins, but if the Yankees win the division, as seems likely, I think the national love will go back to them
