Vavra vs. Frazier

One of the contexts in which I kind of understand Frazier is Elias was hiring him for Vavra's job, not Westburg's.

Its a credit to Elias he has better than $8mm on field value options at all 9 starting positions.    If you wanted to be very kind, you could see it as Elias investing $8mm in a 10th or 11th guy for a team he means to win with, and being coldblooded not overvaluing his own with an assessment basically that Vavra can't play.

Frazier narrowly leads Josh Harrison 76-71 in OPS+.

I'd find this explanation easier to buy, if the team didn't already have better than $8mm options available for 12th, 13th, and 14th players as middle infielders knocking on the door.

You have to constrain reps on everyday hopefuls though if you put them in those roles.

For sure July will be an acid test...Elias is displaying his wares on every shelf he can.

Its possible in 2 or 22 days Westburg and Cowser are regulars going towards less than 172 days of service, and Frazier is the Pokemon evolve of Vavra.

Its certainly possible Elias' justification to Angelos for the outlay was it pays for itself slow rolling Westburg's future earnings potential.    It doesn't seem impossible those folks working on extensions every day keep pinging Westburg to check if he wants that 5/11 extension with nineteen Club options today.

Yes. This was the penalty to be paid for the acquisition of Frazier.

And why so many objected to it.

We're paying a premium (although an admittedly modest one) for having a mediocre player constrain reps in what was already a talent-crowded middle infield.

Are you saying that the business concepts of "ongoing concerns" and "future value of money" are being applied to business decisions?

Just theorizing here:  The penalty is less playing time for options 12, 13, and 14 in 2023.  But it also buys a put/hedge is against the rookies making like Gunnar in the first 2 months while Gunnar is doing the rookie adjustment.  Spreading rookie risk seems like a good idea now that I think about it.  Was it worth $8m for a science experiment?  Could it have bought a few early season wins?

Westburg's postgame debrief packet after today's game will include congratulations on another HR and the Club's improved offer that they will use the premium ring light when they make the video of him reacting to his call-up.

Also Mike Elias is willing to reduce his request to eleven Club options.
