When is the best time to call up rookies?

Mateo has a pretty small sample size (73ABs) vs. Lefties.

Nearly twice as many ABs (135) vs. Righties.

I'd find it far more likely that the Leftie Rightie split favorables are attributable to his hot streak than to anything worth trying to exploit..  In any case:

Mateo has an OPS of .474 in the last 28 days

Mateo has an OPS of .381 in the last 14 days

Mateo has an OPS of .125 in the last 7 days

I don't think his problem is Rightie v Leftie.

I think the problem is that whatever way-out-of character magic he found early in the season is gone. Either scouts figured it out.. or he psyched himself out of it.

Cuz right now... he absolutely stinks with the bat.

My bet is that if the O's are facing a left-handed starter Hyde will have Mateo starting at SS.

The Orioles have gone 12-12 since the end of the Yankee series in late May.  I would say that’s a long enough stretch to justify shaking things up some without worrying about disrupting a streaking team.

Not too optimistic that we will see those changes considering Ortiz is here now and can’t even get on the field.

You’ve put the 30,000 foot numbers on an inchoate sense I have. The Orioles have shown that they are as good as the good and very good teams, but not materially better. To take that next step they will need to take advantage of the huge reservoir of talent  we have a few hundred miles away in Norfolk  by using it to replace some decent players  with with more talent, using both call-ups and trades. Until we do, we’ll be treading water in a nice pool.

You can reverse the question. When do you move on from the vets?

I get it wanting to limit Mateo but I’m not sure Ortiz is who I would go with and that is not a knock on Ortiz. I’m saying right now. You already have Gunnar and Urias potentially for left side. I don’t see Mateo here long term. That said do you want his glove for a playoff run this year? As a late inning defender?

I get wanting to see Westburg up here but perhaps they want it to come at a point when he is close to playing everyday and right now they aren’t ready for that.

All of these players are still here. They are playing everyday, just not in Baltimore. Their skills aren’t being wasted. I see some moves this off-season to open up some spots.

There’s no reason to keep putting Mateo out there. His pathetic offense is too much for his glove to overcome. Same with Frazier except his glove isn’t that good, either.

These two are not good and could pretty easily be replaced with better options. Just gotta have the stones to pull the trigger.

Gunnar 3B

Ortiz SS

Westburg 2B

I would also try to trade Hays + for a pitcher and put Cowser in left field.

I have a hard time dealing Hays right now. Off-season? Perhaps.

My suspicion is that there is a solid chance Mateo gets moved at the deadline. That opens up a spot for Westburg.

The biggest issue I see is getting Cowser up here right now. Hays, Mullins, Santander are all playing well. Hicks is playing well. I don’t see them dealing any of them now. You could at some point send McKenna down but once again you have to be committed to playing Cowser a bunch to justify it. In September you add at least one position player. I think he is definitely up by September. Keep in mind Adley is not DH’ing in the playoffs. Unless it’s a lefty Santander is going to be the DH. Vs a lefty it’s possible it could be someone else but also possible Hicks plays RF.

My guess is the playoff lineups/big games could be

Vs RHP

Mullins CF

Adley C

Santander DH

Gunnar SS

Hays RF

Mountcastle/O’Hearn 1B

Cowser LF

Urias 3B

Frazier/Westburg 2B

LHP

Hays LF

Adley C

Santander DH

Mountcastle 1B

Urias 3B

Mullins CF

Westburg 2B

Gunnar SS

Hicks RF

As far as the other prospects go, those discussions can wait till the off-season. If Mateo gets dealt then Ortiz takes that role over. I do expect to see Westburg before Cowser

    • I always compare where we are in attendance to payroll. As it stands our attendance will be 19th in the league and payroll 22nd. The Twins are at 19th with 130 million dollar payroll which is 22 million higher than ours. I expect the Nats and Tigers to spend a little this offseason so that 130 million mark for 19th place may move closer to 140. Still gives this team 50-60 million to spend on either resigning guys or free agents.
    • Well, the changes to the flex plans this year led both me ($1200 plan) and my friend ($2500 plan) to not renew for next year. The decision to more severely limit playoff presale access and dramatically reduce the discount on food and drinks at the park just didn’t make it worth it to tie up that much money in advance. So, we’ll likely go to far fewer games next year. Given the press reports and online reaction, I have to think we weren’t alone in our decision making.
    • Rivera and Soto are hitting.   Holliday and Mayo are not.
    • Holliday could fill the role of pinch runner that Mateo would fill.
    • Yeah. I don’t get that either. SEA would win head to head tie with HOU and push HOU into WC race but it’s irrelevant if the loses don’t match.
    • Regardless of how down I've been about their recent play, there's always been some hope. Getting some guys back in time for the post season will definitely help.    The way this team has been built requires a group effort. I mean,  Gunnar is a huge star, but the lineup when healthy can be competitive top to bottom. I'm not knocking NY here, but if you can eliminate Judge(almost impossible), you stand a chance vs them. I'm not implying that they will go on a deep run because we've seen how bad it can be, but simply saying that getting healthy and having a shot is the best we as fans could have hoped for with the way this season has gone.
    • So who goes when Westburg and Urias come back?   My first cut is Jimenez.   The second is harder.    Liv Soto is the backup SS so I keep him.     Rivera is a good back up at 1B.   He is out of options.   Then there are  Holliday and Mayo.   Both have options. What's a GM to do?
