Update on the lease negotiations

One thing I recently saw that I don’t think has been talked about much is that there is a clause in this agreement that if the Os get a better deal, that the Ravens are also subject to the same deal.

So, if JA was able to get another 300M, that means the Ravens get another 300M.

Just another reason this doesn’t seem very likely.

Also the venues could get more then $1. 2  billion. That is known as the Santa clause.

The General Assembly last year overwhelmingly passed a bill, with support from the Ravens and Orioles, to allow the stadium authority to borrow up to $1.2 billion at any one time to improve the two pro sports venues — $600 million for each. Those bonds will be repaid by up to $90 million a year in lottery funds. Once some are paid off, more can be borrowed, meaning the venues could be eligible to receive more than $1.2 billion in state money in the coming years.

Also not expecting a short term lease

Also this from the Baltimore Banner:

Orioles CEO John Angelos will not get an extra $300 million in state funds on top of the $600 million already guaranteed, nor will he get exclusive rights to develop part of the state-owned property, a source told The Banner.

Both of those ideas are now off the table

What could he do to force the issue except hint at leaving Baltimore?  Maybe he got his brother to sue him and hint he was leaving to Nashville to try to scare the fans into giving him more money?   Obviously he is aware that MLB is planning to expand to Nashville and probably his horrible wife mentioned how cool it would be to live in Nashville and she could do stuff with her country music and John could be a little dictator of the Nashville Orioles.   I am sure his brother didnt just dream up the Nashville idea on his own.  It must of been joked about at the dinner table for a while probably.

He can't just move the team. This isn't the NFL. It would have to be approved by the owners and that ain't happening period...end of story!!!!

Thank goodness!  I really think that John has his foot lodged in his mouth and as he struggles to get it out he manages to pry it farther in.  He's gotta be ankle deep by now.  I wonder if during one of those Sunday afternoon Country Music Drinking Binges he and his entourage sometimes partake in if someone could please bet him to get a whole baseball in his mouth.  It'll never fit with his foot in there too, but fun to imagine the dimwit attempting it.

With some people, if you give them enough rope, and they will hang themselves with it. John seems like one of those people.

He will never be a negotiator like good ol' dad.  Sometimes, genes just don't get passed on. I hope he doesn't try to take his ball and go to Nashville although he won't.  The tantrum must be hilarious... just sell and live off your ungained riches.

I think he took a page out of the Edward Bennett Williams playbook.  Remember when he said attendance needed to improve or the team might move.

John must have been thinking that the "threat" of Nashville relocation would bully the state to pay for his ambitions and hence his personal profit.

He over played his hand and has sullied the team's 2023 season with his interviews and actions recently.

In the end, he's a typical owner who wants to use public funds to generate his personal profit.

You think?  Lol … usually only having a 7 in your hand doesn’t beat a full house.
He had and has zero leverage in this.  He can sign the lease or his franchise will be suspended by MLB as not having an approved venue for 2024 schedule and his value goes from 1.7 billion to something else. He is too narcissistic and too stupid to have realized this yet.

oh and likely no such offer was ever “on the table” to be now “taken off the table” .. only his grandiose delusion was “on the table”

So, if this is true and he has presumably been told this and you have the Governor saying a deal will get done, which means he knows this and is telling him this…what’s the hold up?

It only takes the delusions of one man to hold this thing up indefinitely.

The chump clause sounds good. Might have a conflict with the Orioles playoff game and the Billy Joel / Stevie Nicks concert. That is actually a good thing .Orioles in the playoffs. I know the Orioles have always been jealous of the Ravens. Not the players but Oriole management.

Anti-chump’ clause makes Ravens a silent party to Orioles lease talks

Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at The Balnamed the “anti-chump clause” makes the Ravens a significant, if silent, party to the Orioles’

Currently, the teams are looking at a possible conflict on Oct. 7. If the Orioles find themselves in the opening game of the American League Division Series, there could be a clash with a Billy Joel/Stevie Nicks concert scheduled for the same day at the Ravens’ stadium. The teams have been in communication about the date and are hopeful of heading off any potential problems, according to two officials with direct knowledge of the matter who declined to be named because the talks are private.

Top Ravens and Orioles officials are outwardly cordial. But three officials with knowledge of the relationship described it as distant. They asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the two neighbors’ dealings.

“I would say that it was very limited,” said Thomas Kelso, who negotiated extensively with both clubs as stadium authority chairman from 2015 until March.

On Jan. 31, Kelso convened a dinner at the Black Olive restaurant in Fells Point with Orioles Chairman and CEO John Angelos and Sashi Brown, the Ravens president. Kelso said in an interview that he organized the meeting “to try to get John and Sashi talking to one another.” Kelso said Angelos arrived 25 minutes late.

In the last few years of his chairmanship, Kelso said: “I saw a willingness of the Ravens to work with the Orioles. I saw very little willingness of the Orioles to work with the Ravens.”

    • Vlad Jr and Burnes....my priorities. Then you can trade Mayo for MMiller.
    • I'm certainly not "fixated" on this. The real issue is the budget. How high will Rubenstein be willing to grow the payroll?
    • It will be retired with the first big $$ free agent or extension signed under Rubenstein.
    • I have no idea what you are arguing.
    • Cool, nice work there.   So? Are we owed a large market? Does DC not deserve their own team? Should the fans of Baltimore just become Redskins fans and not tried to get their own team when the Colts left?  (sorry to bring up football again but come on, that fits). I laid it all out a couple months ago, MLB has more teams bringing home the hunk of metal than other sports since 2000.  The competitive balance is fine.  It's harder?  Yea?  OK it's harder.
    • The Cowboys have an owner with deep pockets. I agree 100% … There is some cap manipulation that happens. At the end of the day they have a $255 million limit they are required to operate under. The Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc can decide each year how much they want to add to the luxury tax fund as opposed to not being able to fit a potential move under the cap. Here are the 2024 payrolls for the NFL and MLB   https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2024/04/03/mlb-team-payrolls-2024-highest-lowest-mets/73139425007/ Highest $305 million vs $60 million  https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/_/year/2024/sort/cap_maximum_space Highest $259.5 million vs $217 million these numbers will likely get tighter once they make additions before the trade deadline.  If you can’t see the difference I’m just wasting my time. The biggest driving force in MLB beyond the ability of some to spend lavishly is the tv markets. The club controls so much of their tv revenue that it’s an unfair game. The moved that created the Orioles didn’t have much of an effect on the Senators tv market which was likely nonexistent then. Plus MLB is allowing contract manipulation like Othani’s contract. Instead of $700 divided by length 10 years, Somehow he only counts as like $46 million which is laughable. Plus they are paying $85 million in luxury tax fees in 2024.    The Orioles were a large market team when the Expos moved to DC. They could afford to spend with the Yankees, Red Sox , and Blue Jays. Could the Orioles afford to pay $85 million in luxury tax fees? Could the Yankees? I know the answer to both.  What grounds ? Who cares ? The impact was astronomical …It made it very difficult to compete in the AL East without tank a thon! It split their tv market in half. Obviously MLB papered over that long enough to get an agreement done.    They turned a large market team into 2 small/mid market teams. The Orioles and Nationals payrolls combined place them only 11th in baseball. Obviously they could afford to spend more. But it’s doubtful either will ever be top 10 for more than a season  or two as they try to hang onto a window.
