Celebrate the playoff clinch?

I saw the way they were celebrating. They acted like they had just won the World Series when they really haven't won anything at all yet. Not even the division. That concerns me because it's important for a team to stay hungry, thirsty, and focused.

Psychologically, an event like this can cause a team to be complacent and they have a game tomorrow against the reigning World Series Champions. It seems like a bad idea to me to expend so much energy partying when you still have alot of business that needs to be taken care of.

I'm glad the guys get to be happy and know that they're going to the playoffs. But that's all it is: I ticket into the playoffs. It means nothing if they don't keep playing up to their potential.

The last thing you want is a team coming out flat with 2 weeks remaining in the season during a tight race to win the Division. The difference between winning the #1 seed and just being a wildcard, could be the difference between being eliminated in the 1st Wildcard round, or getting an easy pass into the Division Series.

They acted like they won the world series because they had a walk off victory.  They always do that when a player gets a walk off victory.  They jump up and down and celebrate.  They dumped the cooler on Mullins in the infield, but how is that different than when they dumped a cooler on Gunnar and Rodriguez yesterday.  What did you want them to do?  Just walk off the field like nothing happened.  After that, they then handed out t-shirts in front of the dugout to celebrate.  No big deal!

This team is full of a bunch of young, hungry players.  A little celebration is not going to derail their desire to win.  They will still have DESIRE.  Let them have fun and then get back to business.  All this whining about celebration is just a big overreaction!!!

That's not what I was talking about. I was talking about the excessive Champaign baths and partying in the clubhouse. Even the owner's son was doing beer bongs.

Love the celebration, they earned it.  A celebration like that also builds team chemistry and bonding (not that we are lacking in that department).  Love the beer bongs, hugs, smiles, and cigars.

For those worried about them being hungover and struggling tomorrow against the Astros, you gotta remember most of our players are in their early to mid 20's.  A pit stop at Taco Bell tomorrow on the way from the airport to the stadium and they'll be just fine.

That's so great to hear.  I'm sure Elias has worked night and day since he took over as GM.

This post kind of exemplifies my concern. The mind set here seems to be that it's time to celebrate because they've done something. They haven't done anything yet. There's no resting on your laurels. Still have games to play and a Championship to win.

Is this what Lift-off looks like??  Even though we weren't really convinced, the record - and the team's accomplishments thus far - seem to point in that direction.

To be honest, I am surprised at how well they've maintained their consistency and resilience, and after the past several years, I've been waiting for for the fade.  I hope it never comes.....

If you think the Orioles are going to rest on their laurels and not be focused then you haven’t been paying attention to this team this year.

Like someone said earlier, the Braves literally have celebrated twice and they’ve won a World Series and easily have their division.

Let the guys enjoy an accomplishment. It won’t change a thing about how they approach the rest of the season. Kinda silly to insinuate it would.

I saw signs in the background of the celebration that said, "Drink Responsibly", so I think we're okay.

Do we get a "B" lineup tomorrow, just for one game?  I'm wondering.....

It’s not like they were drinking IPAs. It looked like Bud Light which is only slightly above water. And most of it was getting sloshed all over the place. I’m sure all those young guys will be fine.

Not sure if you've ever played sports or have been on a team....but moral and cohesiveness matter A TON.  Days like this help solidify a team.

You're acting like the team has the mindset that they clinched it and there's no need to push for more wins/championships/etc.  I guarantee you the truth is the exact opposite.  These kids are hungry.

My wife says the Orioles are so young, they need a Dugout Mother like we use to have Dorm Mothers back in The Day. Way back!!!!!! Sounds like there would be some on here to agree. If you don't think Hyde and all can't / won't control any celebration appropriately especially with upcoming important games, I don't know what to tell you. I've loved watching the celebration. Personnally though, I'm pushing for a Dugout Dog.

    • I’m not going to deny it, when watching the Mays tributes and they spoke of the kid from Alabama  who could do it all, my thoughts drifted to the Orioles young star.  I had to remind myself of how Griffey Jr. and now Trout faded after generating breathless excitement in the first portion of their careers.  It can be a cruel game.
    • I think he will ultimately end up too big,
    • A big 4 hit game. 2nd highest OPS on the team at .853.  If we didn’t have Adley, or Gunnar, everyone would be walking around in Westburg jerseys.
    • First of all, I'm talking about his plan for the Orioles moving forward. I get what the front office was doing early on. Turning around a very bad team by drafting high, picking high upside college hitters the might quickly improve the club. And he's done a helluva job drafting positional talent. But I never understood his reluctance to draft top end college pitching talent. So what we have is a minor league system system of super talented hitters who are blocked from making the bigs because there's literally too many of them. On the flip side there's little to no major league quality pitching talent at all. Fast forward to this off-season. Elias knew damn well the odds of Means and Bradish missing significant time was pretty much 100%. We already had lost Felix for the upcoming season and Wells has a long injury history.  He also had to know Cano wasn't the heir apparent at closer or even a high leverage guy. So what does he do? He brings in an aging Kimbrel to close. And we get Burnes. And believe me, I like Burnes but that wasn't nearly enough for a team with World Series aspirations. And now in late June, it's coming unglued. The pitching injuries are mounting. Guys like Irvin and Suarez are showing they just don't have what it takes. We choose our best minor league arm and it's Cade Povich. I like the kid but he's a fifth starter at best. I guess my main question in this is whether or not Elias realizes how mediocre the pitching staff currently is. And he needs to make moves ASAP because I can see things unraveling. We have the biggest surplus of trade bait in the MLB. At a minimum we need a top end starter and a top notch reliever. Time is ticking
    • I know it seems counterintuitive to go to a six man rotation when we might not have 5 SP, but we’re seeing the reason that we tried to do the 6 man rotation with the Povich promotion before Bradish’s injury.  I say promote McDermott. Go to a 6 man rotation. That will help the other 5 SP. Replace one of Suarez/McDermott when Kremer comes back in 10ish days.
    • Bundy when he had the hitless streak was amazing
    • This move is like when we signed Julio Tehrehan a few weeks ago. We even need guys in AAA to get us through the AAA season. Deep deep depth for the MLB team.  I don’t hear anyone talking about the outrage of blocking TT Bowens from 1B in AAA.
