Is getting a “bye” even a good thing anymore in pro sports?

Not much can be done here or will ever change, but it certainly isn’t the advantage it once was. It’s become the same in the NFL too.

I came here to start this thread, you beat me to it. I was going to say "in baseball," though. It's still worth gold in the NFL. But baseball is a different sport. It's a sport where they are used to playing everyday, with at most one day off here and there. O's lost, Braves were shut out, and the Dodgers are losing 9-0. Only the cheaters won, barely.

They wanted to make the MLB playoffs like the NFL's, but these are vastly different sports.

It’s an advantage in that you have already advanced to the next round and can’t get knocked out in three.  But I am not convinced it is an advantage against whoever wins the wildcard series.

I think if you asked the Rays, the Jays, the Marlins, or the Brewers, they would say the bye is a nice thing to have.

Shorten the season to 154 games and start the playoffs a week earlier. Maybe it ends a week later in November still, but does that really matter? Know this isn’t going to ever happen, but just my thou

The more you expand the playoffs the more importance you give to it—and devalue the regular season. I watch a lot of games so I put a lot of value in winning the most regular season games. I wouldn’t mind, after 162 games, if the playoffs was simply the best team in the AL meeting the best team in the NL for a fun exhibition of who is the “best” that year. If you like the playoffs vibe, cut the regular season in half and expand the playoffs significantly. The current model of playing an eternity then having teams play best of three games is nutty.

Agreed though I'd make it even shorter than that.  The season is already too long and then they force more postseason games on us.  The fans have less and less of an attention span for each game the more they thrust on us.

This will never happen because of TV money, but go back to the old 1 game wild card playoff with only two wild cards.  Next day start the ALDS .  No days off.  No travel days during the divisional series as well.  Make teams  set rosters for the entirety of the playoffs instead of each series.  Teams can only make changes as they do during the season either option or IL.  I thought that after last year's playoffs, not just because of the Orioles.   The current system doesn't reward the better teams as it should.

That's what the NBA does. They have very long playoffs, and the regular season is basically a joke. This will never happen in baseball, and it shouldn't.

The NBA has a very long season then a very long playoffs. I am saying, a team can get eliminated in June. No more games for them. That’s fun. But people don’t get paid for fun.

The NHL is kind of like that too. Too many teams get into the playoffs in the NHL and it minimizes the impact of the regular season.

I would take the bye every time.   It allows the players to rest and recover.  It allows the pitching to get set up so the teams best pitchers are pitching.

Bottom line the O's offense needs to be better.  Probably not going to win scoring 2 run per game.

      Am I crazy for thinking Burnes isn't going to sniff Cole's deal?  I'm thinking like 7/260-280.  I don't think he's going to sniff Cole's deal.  For starters i dont think hes as good a pitcher as Cole was at the time of his signing.  Also, the Yankees aren't going to be in the bidding so that leaves the Mets, Giants, Nats, Orioles as teams that can afford him.  The Sox could too, but they're on the fringe of contention and might opt to develop more with the Yankees and Orioles solidly ahead of them in division.  Only the Mets from that list really seem like teams that would go over 300m for a pitcher, but they will be pressed for money because of the luxury tax.

      Agree a strong RHP bullpen arm that misses bats would be good to add. Looking at Spotrac I don’t see who it would be. Dominguez could certainly be someone that could fill this role.

      It looks like I misread your post as being about last offseason instead of the 2017-2018 offseason.  My mistake, but does that in any way affect my overall point - you know the part that I made explicit and you left out of your response - that all the old, reflexive Angelosian nonsense no longer automatically applies? I'm unclear on what you're driving at, especially if I have to go back to the 2017-2018 offseason when Peter Angelos might still have been giving input on running the team.  I think it's a stretch to try to draw parallels to those days, or even the John Angelos years, to David Rubenstein potential as an owner.

      I forgot the name of the movie, but Jimmy Fallon was playing a BoSox superfan (tough role for an NY kid) and it was during the era of the ‘curse’ (right at the end of it actually) — a kid he was coaching asked, “What have the Red Sox ever done for you?” His character didn’t have an answer. But it made me think. The movie was out during the 14-years of losing seasons. I asked myself the same question about whether a lifetime of fandom was worth it. For me, outside of my family - 15 generations or more on the Eastern Shore - the O’s are also part of my DNA.  Win, lose, lose horribly, lose ugly, bad ownership, they just can’t shake me. All that said, I totally understand the frustration. It will take me a little longer to heal from this ugly exit to 2024.

      In the market and $$$ for SP = Mets, Cubs, BOS, WAS and SFG (depending on Snell opt-out).  That’s enough chairs when music stops for Burnes and Fried to cash in, and still ample for second tier Eovaldi, Manea, Kikuchi, Flaherty.
