Trace Bright 2024

Made his 2024 debut yesterday.

Went 3.2. Walked 2, struck out 6, 2 H and no runs.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that it took him 71 pitches and only threw 39 strikes.  Poor strike% but he is definitely one of the pitchers worth keeping an eye on this year.

There seemed to be a lot of buzz about him this spring.  I’m hoping for a big step forward for him.  We definitely need to see more strikes but it’s early in the year so I won’t worry much about that just yet.

To be fair to all of these guys, that exactly been ideal weather/pitching conditions yet. Now, other pitchers are pitching in the same conditions and throwing more strikes but it’s fair to note it.  Doesn’t mean they don’t need to improve though.

Luis De Leon was, but it is only April. Rust is a very real thing in sports.

In his second start, Bright allowed 3 ER on 8 hits in 5 IP, striking out 8 without a walk.  He threw 57 strikes in 80 pitches.  Mixed bag of an outing.

Yeah, I’ll take the better control for now with the good BB:K numbers.  Hopefully, he learns to make less mistakes in the strike zone as he gains more experience.

The sweeper looks new. He had a 12-6 ish curveball last year so maybe another look for him?

Bright had a solid outing last night: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K’s.  49 of 84 pitches for strikes.  

On the year, in 18.2 IP, Bright has a 2.41 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 and 3.3 K/BB.  He’s allowed more hits than you’d like (23 in 18.2 IP) but had allowed only 2 homers (both in the same outing) and has done a good job keeping runs off the board.
