Huh. All the way to the dirt? I hadn't noticed, but I haven't watched a lot of baseball lately, and certainly haven't been paying extra attention to the catcher.

It's all about the optics for the ump.  Closer to the hitter, lower to the ground, knee down...

Eric Longenhagen has him up to #4 MLB-wide on his BOARD refresh including 2024 draftees updated this afternoon at Fangraphs.

Is that a top 5 ranking I see post draftees in late July?  Interesting. 🤔

Wood and Holliday will be graduating from prospect lists soon.  Fangraphs has Basallo at #4.  That's puts Basallo at #2 and only behind Caminero of TB.  Caminero could easily play in the 20ish+ games if he's called up in September.  So... Basallo could be #1 on FG.

Basallo needs to get hot towards the end of this season too to keep that position. While he's held his own and done some cool things, he's been in quite a funk for awhile now, so hopefully his 3 hit game last night will start a hot streak.

Very similar numbers from Delmarva at 18 to Bowie at 19 as of now. He got off to that slow start. Who knows how many of those triples in Delmarva were cheapies because of low A defense?

Same number of PAs basically between Delmarva and Bowie. Same K rate. Slightly less BA, less BB rate, and less triples. That’s the OPS difference.

I’d love to see him go ballistic, but he’s having a fine year. Holding his own.  His numbers are holding strong as he moves up.

Looks like Basallo sat out the July finale this afternoon.    MiLB now has his July 2024 split at 226/333/355 which I guess is now final.

SO/BB was 14/11, his best month at that.     April/May/June had been 22/2, 20/10 and 16/10.

We'll see this winter where on the Robinson Chirinos to James McCann scale Elias lands choosing a backup catcher.    I don't think he'll turn it over to Blake Hunt.

I think he'll turn it over to someone besides Basallo. Maybe this time next year if he has a good year at Norfolk. I was hoping for better power numbers this year, and it seems most say he has a ways to go defensively.

I think clubhouses prefer not to change catchers late so if we signed a better guy like McCann it'd feel more likely his 2025 heads for the Coby Mayo zone.

A Basallo/Adley 50/50 C/DH time share for next year makes a lot of sense.  We could fire Mayo and Basallo at trying to win the ROY for the draft pick.

I bet the math works out that age 27 Basallo > age 20 Basallo.

This is more likely the case for 2026, not 2025.

I agree with those who think Basallo will get the Mayo treatment next year. He'll only be called up early if he's setting the AAA world on fire, which is possible I guess. Still, he has defense to work on just like Mayo does.

Yeah, but you have to factor in that his time on the same team with Gunnar/Adley/Westburg/Holliday is more valuable than time when they aren't all together.  Plus, if it keeps Adley fresh then that is extra value.  Plus, we could have Mayo and Basallo go for the ROY in 2025 to win the pick.
