So the second-segment-only WAR totals were the following, in order of +rWAR.

  • Henderson 1.9 rWAR/1.4 fWAR
  • Mateo 1.0/0.7
  • Westburg 0.9/0.9
  • Rutschman 0.8/0.8
  • Urias 0.4/0.3
  • O'Hearn 0.4/0.2
  • Santander 0.3/0.1
  • Mountcastle 0.2/0.2
  • Stowers 0.1/0.1
  • Kjerstad 0.1/0
  • Cowser -0.1/+0.3
  • Hays -0.1/0
  • McCann -0.3/-0.4
  • Mullins -0.6/-0.8

So who had Urias as our fifth most valuable player over the last 27 games?  😎

Just to be clear... each line isn't how they did in that 27 game period, is it?   Looks like it is actually their overall line at the end of that period.

Yes.  I think I said that when I posted the results though segment 2.  I can't do the math on wOBA, xwOBA to separate one segment from the next.   I could do a good estimate, but it would be very time consuming.

That’s a pretty consistent year for Mateo so far. Do you know how many contenders would love to have him?  Especially the older, plodding, teams.

I guess I don’t understand WAR very well. How is Hays right with Santander for basically the month of June?  Santa has what 13HR this month?  And has played decent defense. What has Hays done?  Is there anyone here who would rather see Hays in the lineup than Santander?  It just doesn’t make sense to me.

It’s a good question.   Here’s a breakdown of the two in the 27-game stretch in question (which does not include the last two games):

Hays: 52 PA, .362/.423/.660, 3 HR, 7 RBI

Santander: 113 PA, .272/.319/.641, 12 HR, 24 RBI

Obviously, the slash line favors Hays, but in less than half the playing time.  Defensively Hays was +1 DRS this segment while Santander was -3.   That’s a swing of 0.4 rWAR in Hays’ favor.   OAA had Hays at -1 and Santander at -2, which favors Hays by a bit less than 0.1 fWAR.

The main lesson here is that homers are great, but not making outs and playing good D have a lot of value.  I’m still kind of surprised Hays edged out Santander in rWAR and was close in fWAR, playing a part-time role.
