Kremer really didn’t have his best stuff or command last night.  It just wasn’t his night.  It happens.

Yes, but for me that is one of the biggest challenges in baseball especially for a starting pitcher, how do you handle the outings when you don't have your best stuff.

Also want to say, excellent thread title.

Kremer should have gone on IL for the blister when Grayson came back.

His performance had nothing at all to do with a blister as far as anyone knows. You don’t IL a non-injured player.

He probably had too many days off, that was at least part of his issue. 8 days b/w starts is an eternity for a starter. That won’t be an issue again for a long while, maybe all season, even with the Sox man rotation, given the dearth of off days upcoming.

Kremer denied both the blister and the extra rest as reasons, as any pitcher normally would. I tend to think both absolutely were a factor regardless of what he said. Would have been a convenient way to keep Irvin in the rotation and get Dean some extra time to get comfortable after getting the blister removed. It's extremely painful to deal with a popped blister and it takes a long time to form a new callous, etc.

Just my opinion, no huge deal either way.

THIS. I said it last night in the game thread. This stupid six man rotation and moving starters around like chess pieces messes w/ their routines. You have to get Burnes on turn every 5 days to maximize him and then everyone else is like roulette. After last night, Kremer should just be moved to the pen and go back to a 5 man rotation.

I don’t agree that a 6 man is ruining anything. I think one extra day for these guys (other than Burnes) is fine, I don’t think they’re overly accustomed to ‘normal’ rest anyway. Plus it helps limit innings a bit for the ones that matters on (Means back from TJ, Bradish elbow issue, Grayson shoulder issue - the extra day for these guys is a positive thing).

What the 6 man does impact is the BP of course. We can’t afford many four inning outings like last night, and a bunch of fives would hurt too. So it’s a bit of a tightrope on that front.

Diaz has always been right there with Bucknor and Angel Hernandez forming the ugly trinity of the worst of the worst umps. Blew a huge missed strike when Cionel Perez was pitching also so he definitely gets a huge assist for the Cards winning game 1.

In Euroleage basketball they suspend refs for poor performance while in MLB you keep working and even get a strong chance to work the postseason.

They haven’t even gone to a six man rotation yet, so nothing is getting ruined. And do you know how many times Burnes pitched on four days’ rest last year?   Six times.  23 times on five days’ rest.  So if the O’s go to a six man rotation during a month-long period when they have one day off, all they’ll be doing is ensuring that Burnes gets the amount of rest he usually does.   I realize that we acquired Burnes to be our ace, but I don’t want my ace (or my other pitchers) running on fumes in September because we pushed them too hard in June when we had an unusually packed schedule.  So if Hyde decides to use a 6th starter a couple of times in June, fine by me.

I never saw this posted. Basically he was just bad for the Orioles.

Rather amazingly, a 1.13 run favor to our opponent is only the 3rd largest disadvantage we’ve had so far this season, per Umpire Scorecard — Vic Carapazza gave the Brewers a 1.21 run edge back on 4/13 and Sean Barber provided a 1.65 run advantage for the Royals on 4/21.

Looking at Umpire Scorecard is actually infuriating me at the moment, because we’ve gotten absolutely hosed by the umps so far. Only Oakland and the White Sox have received more of a disadvantage from the umps so far, with the O’s checking in at a whopping -7.56 runs so far.

Our most favored game thus far has been getting a 0.71 run edge against the Nats on 5/7. We’ve had SIX separate games where we were more disfavored than that.

Cleveland has actually been the most favored team so far (by a wide margin), but I’m sure you can guess who is number two. I don’t like to Judge, but the umps have been quite a Boone to the team whose meat the league has Rodon for decades.

    • The answer appears to be, yes, you can receive more than one compensation picks. Angels -- Shohei Ohtani: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Blue Jays -- Matt Chapman: Pick after Round 4 Cubs -- Cody Bellinger: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Padres -- Blake Snell: Pick after Round 4 Padres -- Josh Hader: Pick after Round 4
    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
