Coby Mayo in AAA this year:

  • 48 games
  • .301/.370/.617/1.048
  • 13 2B, 2 3B, 15 HR
  • 20 BB, 56 K
  • 41 RBI

Gunnar Henderson in his AAA career:

  • 65 games
  • .288/.390/.504/.894
  • 13 2B, 4 3B, 11 HR
  • 38 BB, 78 K
  • 38 RBI

It's well past time to call Coby up

If Gunnar were in AAA at 22 he would have 30 HRs in 48 games with an OPS of 2.000

The difference is the age that those numbers were put up. They both are the same age. Both born in 01'. So obviously what Gunnar did 2 seasons ago at age 20/21 was much more impressive.

But I get your point, you love Coby Mayo and think he may be able to help our offense. The problem is that even if he does, that doesn't solve our greatest needs (rotation and bullpen). We already have the #1 offense in the sport.

Roy , thanks for showing these stats side by side . I didnt realize just how good Mayo really is . Now I’m going with don’t trade Coby camp .

They better get some return if they do

So what is the real story on his defense? Because if he's playable at 3B, there is a spot for him to play. Mateo has been seeing his numbers slide down of late (notwithstanding the homer and triple this week). And while Urias had that surge, he seems to be trailing off again as well.

Now, if he's just not playable at 3B defensively, that's a different story and we are in a position where he gets the Kjerstad/Stowers treatment with very limited playing time.

Oh man, Wilson Betemit.

Is his defense good enough? Isn’t defense the reason he hasn’t been called up? And he’s a 3B, if I recall, and it’s a long way from Westburg to Wilson Betemit.

We don't know the real reason he's been called up, probably never will.  I think everyone assumes that it's defense because the bat appears ready and his defense has been often cited as his one drawback.

The age thing really shows how special Gunnar is.  What Mayo is doing at age 22 is still impressive.  It's a valid note, but shouldn't be misconstrued or framed as a knock on Mayo.

Adding runs scored per game is just as valid of a strategy as reducing runs allowed per game.  Given the noted risk factors of pitching. probably more projectable too.  Even if we're buying controllable arms...

    • There is no chance that over 60 mph for a QB is the equivalent of 102.  QBs do not train for velocity like pitchers do.
    • I would prefer they ask for Jon Gray in spite of the Orioles destroying him in his last start - he wouldn't have to face the Orioles lineup again.
    • He makes $43 million this year. The Mets are paying $21 million of that. I don’t think we pick up the remaining $10+ post deadline for 10-12 starts. It would just depend on what Texas would ask for to pick up the tab.
    • Haynie on 105.7, has been beating the Luis Robert drum for months on the O’s pre game show. So I think that’s why people like the idea of Robert. Robert also is always hurt.  We need a bat. Probably a RH bat to DH in the playoffs versus a LH SP. That bat is Mayo. It’s just hard to get Mayo up before September when we get the extra roster spot.
    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
