I might have to check out Pinstripe Alley before bed tonight. Yankees fans are going to tear apart Boone for using Cortes in this situation and then walking the bases loaded putting the winning run in scoring position.

Most of all how do throw Cortes into that situation he hasn't pitched in over a month and he's not a high leverage relief pitcher.

First base was open. Runners advanced on the foul ball caught in the stands. (I didn't know about this rule.)

The runners had already moved up to 2nd and 3rd before the walk.

Probably the Ohtani double in the eighth, where he reached third because Torres misplayed the throw from RF. Led to the Betts sac fly next batter.

Got it--thanks. I know it's not borne out statistically,  but one thing I enjoy about playing the Yankees is the feeling that on a crucial defensive play there's a decent chance that Gleyber, Soto, or Volpe (or in the future Jasson Domíguez) will blow it.

Freddie Freeman just made me a fan. I love the confidence and the sheer openness and "matter of fact" style of his personality after hitting the game winner.

That might be one of my top non Orioles moments in baseball history.  Yankees blowing it in the 10th and one of good guys in the game doing it.  Freeman has been through a lot as a person in the past with his family and this year with his son for him to be the guy to hit the Grand slam is fitting.

The bad leg in both Gibson and Freeman's cases is poetic.    Luke Weaver had better not be Dennis Eckersley in the years to come though.

Freddie's mom and dad made him not long after Gibson's heroics.    Like Justin Turner, Freeman still looks kind of young but is at a pretty advanced baseball age.

Curious to see what kind of Carlos Rodon shows up tonight - his year was all over the map.

Japan Series Game 1 - Roberto Osuna got the last out on the winning side, he's been the closer on that league's top team.

    • The pattern, as I see it, is two straight years of getting swept in the first round of the playoffs.  The takeaway is that the teams were not good enough to win in the playoffs. The crack in the model, IMHO, is the drafting strategy that excluded high ceiling pitching prospects in the draft. I will concede that that may not have had a huge effect on the 2024 team had the hitters they drafted instead had actually performed well when they came up. Timing and injury luck were definitely factors, but every team has injuries and bad luck. Depth helps mitigate injuries.  Gunnar is a star, I agree. Adley was not good in 2024. Westburg got hurt.  With regard to how playoff games outweigh regular season games I can only say that "flags fly forever."
    • Guilty. I watch the second half of the game after I got home. Turns out the Schadenfreude I feel from watching the Yankees lose might win out over my indifference of watching Rob Manfred's dream World Series match up.
    • I've had better, but we're very much in alignment this off-season, which hasn't often been the case. They need a RHH OF option.  It doesn't have to be a regular, but it has to be somebody who can defend and hit lefties.  It's a need but it is a supplemental piece to what is already there. Same is really true of the bullpen.  They need to supplement what they have. The rotation is a little different, as it always is, because you can literally never have enough great starting pitching.  But most of the rotation is already in place. If they spent a lot of money this is where I suspect it would be at.  But they don't have to sign a 100+ million FA contract to bring in a guy that can make this rotation championship caliber.
    • I was surprised to find this thread, not to mention the majority of posts.  I love good baseball, and with these two teams' rosters, was hoping I'd see just that.  Got to witness some incredible plays (that Edman stop on the RF side of 2B was so pivotal, the Verdugo catch, the fan interference, some gutsy gritty get-out-of-a-jam pitching on both sides). With all that, I still had to fight the urge to turn it off after the LAD were unable to convert the DP and allowed the go-ahead run in the 8th.  As someone above said, I really didn't want to watch the Yankee celebrations.   Instead, I reminded myself that I was watching Ohtani in the WS, against Judge in the WS, and that baseball has a way of turning everything on its head in a flash, and World Series games have an extra zing for the players that makes stars come out of nowhere.  I didn't want to miss that. As usual, I believe I woke up the neighbors when I saw the ball leave FF's bat in the bottom of the 10th.  It was pure gold.  I feel bad for baseball fans that missed watching that classic, and enjoying the Yankees being taken down. 😆
    • Another great post.  Easily one of my favorite posters on this site.
    • I think this is the best post you have ever made.  Really well said. I think what CoC was saying is that the BJs had good young talent on offense.  The depth of that talent is greatly questioned and yea, their FA signings have larger been failures. I don’t think people will ever learn that throwing 9 figure deals at aging and soon to be declining players isn’t a smart thing to do…but hey, it makes our payroll number look so much better!  Ownership is trying!!!
    • Good post. The Blue Jays references are basically nonsensical and just made for the crying losers to cry loudly and loserly with no coherent point to make. First, it ignores that the Blue Jays had a pretty successful run, 3 out of 4 years in the playoffs, with the off-year being a 91 win which as you point out would almost certainly results in a playoff berth under current rules. Second, if the Blue Jays are to be defined as an example of being unsuccessful, then it makes your "argument" (not that you really have one other than wishing to cry and moan) weaker, because they did exactly what you want the Orioles to do.  They signed plenty of FAs.  They brought in Gausman, over 100 million; Bassit, over 20 mil annually; Chad Green, 3 year contract for a bullpen arm; Kikuchi 3 years for a Japanese FA; Springer, 150 million. Again, it is moronic and nonsensical.  tHe bLuE jAys aRe FaIlUrEs, tHe oS sHoUlD dO wHaT tHeY dID. The Blue Jays weren't more successful primarily because their own internal players, including Vlad Jr., did not/have not become the players they hoped for. The same will be true for the Orioles over the next 5 years.  Their success or failure will almost entirely hinge on how Rutschman, Henderson, Cowser, Kjerstad, Holliday, Bassallo and a few others perform/develop.  If most of those guys don't perform as well above average regulars, no vEtErAn bAt is going to make much of a difference.
