If I recall correctly, he had some body composition/work ethic issues in his first couple of years in pro ball. Perhaps @Tony-OH or some of the other posters who follow the lower levels of the system avidly can elaborate.
I like the kid just because his first name makes me want to riff on "Higher" or "Arms Wide Open." But I digress.....
I'm not sure..I remember hearing the Sox had a pretty high demand on Robert, has the price come down again I don't know. I believe the owner said that payroll could get lower this year. Shoot there is rumblings he may sell to the franchise to the Dave Stewart group who then would moved them to Nashville. At least this is what I read recently.
Perez is more trusted than Soto. Look at how they were used in the playoffs. Soto was the last one of the 4 lefties used. That lets you know where he stands. Sure, he had a good ERA in his last 20 appearances, in what role though? The TJ MacFarland, Mop up LHRP role?
Soto was a shot in the dark. I don't really care about his 5 million salary or if it was 5k. The three other lefties are more valuable, and we need a free spot to shuttle in fresh arms.
Akin - can go more than 3 outs
Perez - is trusted. Doesn't give up homers.
Coloumbe - is a good setup man
Soto - put up a mop up ERA in low leverage.
There's not room for 4 LH RP, but that's just my opinion. We could always trade Soto.
We'll see what Elias does? I think we're going to see more moving and shaking this offseason.
Why do they need to cut payroll? If I were them, the top priority would be acquiring MLB quality prospects. Regardless, if I am the Orioles, I am not paying $15M and a team top 5 prospect for a guy now with perhaps negative contract value.
