How realistic is it that a guy who has limited time in A ball is going to stick on the Orioles' major league roster all year? Chances are good we'll be required to offer him back to the Brewers.

Chances are against him sticking, but if we add one or two more relievers, we will have a bullpen with Uehara, Johnson, and Gonzalez at the back-end, with decent middle relievers in whoever we sign plus Vandenhurk, Simon, or Berken, it could be very easy to stash him in the back-end.

I will explain this again. If we had added Beato and Egan to the roster, they would automatically go to the "bottom," meaning they would be one of the firsts to be taken off the roster should be need 40 man roster spots. If they are removed from the roster, they can be claimed by someone and kept on their 40 man roster with three option years. If we can keep Rosario on the roster, then someone could/should be able to stash those two for a whole year, but we will see. If they are returned to us, then they by-pass the 40 man roster.

With an overall 11.5 K/9 ratio, he is a very high upside guy, more so than Beato or Egan.

Now, there are plenty of other options I would rather have had over Rosario, but so be it.

I agree with your logic and MacPhail's but I am not sure that is the way it will play out. In addition to the 6 spots that are open on the roster, Andino is now out of options and probably fodder. And Lebron could probably be passed through waivers and assigned to AAA because of his 2nd TJ surgery. That's 8 spots. That doesn't even go into Viola which is another story. It seems Beato could have been protected.

However, I will call the whole thing interesting and nothing more because MacPhail is on a roll and I like what he is doing. No need to the question him at this point.

As we've seen, teams sometimes make these roster decisions to keep the talent - even if the player isn't ready. There's a reason the O's picked him.

We can always stash him on the MLB DL and use the maximum rehab assignment length to get him some more MiLB polish.

We could try, but he needs to spend at least 90 days on the active roster.

I think he could be stashed away as the 7th man if we have a bullpen containing Uehara, JJ, Gonzalez, and some combination of VDH, Berken, Simon, Patton, and/or 1-2 free agents, he could easily be put away in the bullpen.

Interesting side note. It appears that Jacob Rasner, who we took in the AA phase of Rule 5, is the twin brother of Jesse Rasner, O's RHP, who went from GCL through to Aberdeen last season. Same birth date and hometown. Jesse actually seems to have better numbers but is obviously a step or two behind his brother in progressing up the ladder. Both just turned 24 last Sat.

I see. I think you're right though, he won't be hard to stash away in the pen. Putting him on the DL just buys us some time.

The odds are against it but a guy with a big arm always has a puncher's chance. I thought of Jorge Julio. In 2000, he was putting up awful numbers as a starter in high A ball. By the end of 2001 he was pitching in the bigs and in 2002 wound up saving 25 games as their closer. This guy will have to make a bigger leap but he won't be asked to be the closer either. It's a longshot, but one worth taking.

You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

Just wanted to drop in and say you may have gotten a solid bullpen arm in Casey Lambert. He was climbing the ladder quickly dominating all the way up to AA before his injury. He should be fully recovered from his Tommy John surgery and if he can regain form he should be a nice middle reliever. I was not happy to see him go.

Don't be fooled by the games he started in 2009. He should be a reliever all the way, but the Cubs like to have their strong relief prospects start for a season or so to refine secondary pitches.

Regardless, still a pretty good pick up for the Orioles.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
